Continuing our marking of National Careers Week, today we turn to Emma McConachie for her superb insight into 'What companies in our field need to do to promote career opportunities to young people more'.
Emma has a terrific perspective on this, thanks to her work in the industry over a number of years.
She's someone who is already providing inspiration and guidance to our first Future Leaders Programme cohort.
Emma says:
"Reiterating what I said at the IRLA round table last year - it falls into three buckets: attract, train and retain.
We need to think about what young people want from careers and how insurance might offer these.
ATTRACT: we need to create roles that entail meaningful, purposeful work, and tell the story of the value we bring to society through insurance.
We need to consider career flexibility, blended working opportunities, fair pay, culture, inclusion, diversity, and creation of supportive communities that will attract a very broad range of young people to come and join the insurance industry.
TRAIN: employers must build long term learning journeys for new joiners, so that each individual can have a fulfilling career from a technical, a leadership, and from a personal perspective.
This involves a blend of further education, internal mobility, training, mentorship and coaching being offered to those who want such opportunities.
RETAIN: we need to think about career paths and succession planning in order that young people can see an interesting, varied, long term path forward for their careers when they join an organisation, rather than simply taking a job.
Time and resource needs to be put into retaining your talent, rather than simply moving them up a ladder from time to time, and offering a bit more money.
Once organisations have put time and thought into attracting, training and retaining a broad and diverse range of talent, then we can truly say we've done justice to offering young people careers they can enjoy and flourish in."
What do you make of Emma's views?
