There is a growing need for people under 65 with life-limiting illnesses to receive adequate support services in the community if they wish to remain at home. Increasingly, access to NDIS National Disability Insurance Scheme is not likely for this cohort of people, however there is an urgent need to address gaps in services that assist with daily living, functional and other basic non-clinical support. You are invited to participate in a research study exploring the experiences of social workers in supporting people with a life-limiting illness to access the NDIS. This is a critically important article about missed opportunities for Medicaid funded services for students with disabilities in schools. It’s such a strong reminder to me about the importance of cross-disability organizing. The infrastructure needed to bill properly for, say, mental health services can ultimately benefit kids with rare health disorders. Broadening our understanding of who has a disability and who needs services can help us get over a mental hump of “But XYZ disability service benefits so few people, and therefore it’s too cumbersome to implement.” This isn’t the way to think. Having a framework instead of the chocolate wheel will certainly help standardise plans so there is some consistency.I do agree that there are many who have been left out because of lack of competence in support staff.Those in hospitals, those in places like Regency Green and other nursing homes.Who seem to have been overlooked by their advocates and by the scheme.It is in the states best interests to solve the social care issue if they EVER wish to end the ramping crisis.Health equity will enable many to stay out of hospitals and nursing homes.Competency and focus on our workforce will enable ALL to live the quality of life that the NDIS vision intended.It is crazy that some cant get out of bed with large plans whilst others are working out how to get massage paid for. All of us need to share the vision so no one is left behind.Ideally that will be inclusive of the over 65's we abandoned.Its mad we left them out then allowed the NDIS to grow in the manner it did.Too many have good plans that aren't utilised properly and all a plan means is the revolving door of staff who add little value.Providers, staff and participants need to work together towards the future for a scheme that is sustainable, leaves no one behind is something that is the envy of the world.We must avoid the loop of needless repetition and remember the path we have trodden together or we will all be doing this forever.It is time now to get stuff done.

This is interesting I remember the early days of developing NDIS and the trials with the intention of it being an added services to what was already in place in Community health and the education system more supported. The goal being that not ALL people would stay on it, that many could be supported to build capacity, independence and only those who could do that and required suppprt ongoing would remain that being a small percentage. The goal of the scheme being additional to community health, instead I have seen community health struggle, and the education system struggle, even myaged care is struggling with the level of funding provided in packages. https://lnkd.in/gD-PhXrb Interesting times ahead, especially as 3 providers who have been in the sector for 4 years are now closing their doors… 2 of them unregistered providers, who are owed thousands of dollars, as people overspend their funding on STA and not paying their weekly supports, which is their choice, but now they are out of funding and no plan review date yet…some waiting at least 5 months.

We’ve demonstrated our commitment to this value through abundant free resources, below market rates, an income-based sliding scale, scholarship options, and support for submitting superbills. We originally chose to be private pay as a way to provide services that insurance wouldn’t pay for…namely supports for Autistic adults! With many insurers removing the 18/21 year age cap, we are seeing success getting these essential services covered for neurodivergent folks of all ages! The credentialing process is a long one, but we anticipate that we can start billing insurances by the end of 2024 if not sooner. We have applied for Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, BCN, and Cigna. We are open to credentialing in other insurers with high demand, but have found these to be our most common insurance types and also ones that don’t have age caps.
