"Marginal Gains - 1%" The fate of British Cycling changed one day in 2003. David Brailsford had been hired to put British Cycling on a new trajectory, who introduced the "aggregation of marginal gains,” which was the philosophy of searching for a tiny margin of improvement in everything you do. Brailsford and his team continued to find 1 percent improvements in overlooked and unexpected areas. Just five years after Brailsford took over, the British Cycling team dominated the road and track cycling events at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where they won an astounding 60 percent of the gold medals available. Lesson:- 1. Identify the area, where you need improvement. 2. Improve by marginal %age. 3. Be consistent. 4. Observe the performance. 5. Maintain patience. Improving by 1 percent isn’t particularly notable—sometimes it isn’t even noticeable—but it can be far more meaningful, especially in the long run. The difference a tiny improvement can make over time is astounding. For ex:- If you learn only 1 new word everyday, by the end of the month you will have 30 new words in your vocabulary. #Shashi #LnD #SIRCLE

In 2023, the inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships were staged in Glasgow and across Scotland (United Kingdom). It was the first time that 13 individual UCI World Championships were brought together in a single event. Yesterday an independent socio-economic report on the impact of this inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships conducted by EY was published. I am very proud and privileged to have had the opportunity to play a part alongside a group of very talented management, events, marketing and commercial professionals that delivered this historic event which brought about significant socio-economic benefits for Glasgow, Scotland and the UK. Key highlights for me from this socio-economic report are : 💰 A £205 million boost for the local economy 🚲 Inspiring 79% of residents to cycle more ❤️ 95% of residents proud to host the event. 👏 93% of stakeholders intend to continue activities that they started in relation to the Championships. ♻ 85% of stakeholders felt the Championships were delivered in an environmentally responsible way. 🚴♀️ & 🚶♂️ 82% of visitors used a form of active travel during the 2023 UCI Cycling Worlds. Link to summarised report : https://lnkd.in/eD2tx7D9 In the words of Christof Backhaus, Professor of Marketing and Head of Research, Napier University : "The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships have further fuelled the momentum around cycling as a catalyst for change" #GlasgowScotland2023 #powerofthebike #majorevents #sportsbusiness #purposeledpartnerships https://lnkd.in/e8YzCFTC

For fun, I recently updated the data on the French "#TourDeFrance" cycling history to analyze how champions have improved their performance from 1919 to 2023. It's fascinating to see that the difference in pace between the winner and the median of all riders is only 1.8 km/h. Even more striking is the 2.8 km/h difference between the first and last rider. Considering the Tour de France spans over 3,000 km, the time difference translates to several hours. However, when you reflect on the speeds and paces achieved by all participants, it’s clear they are all elite athletes. https://lnkd.in/e5EbXVZN

An interesting article from road.cc on diversity representation in cycling imagery - something that Cycling UK is very active in trying to get right and show that cycling is for everyone. As a woman in mountain biking, I very often feel side-lined by places, clubs, or brands. Whilst I'm sure this is rarely a deliberate exclusionary choice, it shows the impact of careful wording and image use. Seeing yourself represented is such a powerful engagement tool, it's not just a pretty picture 🙌 What are your thoughts? https://lnkd.in/eStYPm3S

National cycling strategies have gained popularity in Europe, however, they are not yet mainstream. In 2023 four more European countries were added to the list of countries with a national cycling strategy: Belarus, Croatia, Hungary and Israel. Three more countries have adopted policies similar to a national cycling strategy: Ireland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. #cycling #bikes #bicycling #cyclingandbikes
