As we head through late April and into May, we approach the peak severe storm season across the US Southern Plains. This year is set to kick off with an active start with the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) forecasting several rounds of severe storms this weekend. Our preferred analogues for May point towards a mean pattern featuring low pressure across the Rockies and high pressure across the US E/SE. This pattern is similar to the active storm seasons of May 2019, 2013 and 2010. This leads us to believe May 2024 is likely to be an active severe storm month for the Southern Plains with an elevated risk of tornadoes, hail and flooding.
