South Africa’s auditor landscape: A discussion with the University of the Free State   This week, I had the opportunity to present and participate in a thought-provoking workshop on auditor liability in South Africa, hosted by the University of the Free State, on behalf of Cox Yeats and the Johannesburg Business Restructuring, Rescue and Insolvency team led by Gareth C..   The discussion workshop was hosted by several professors, audit, accounting, and industry experts. A word of gratitude to Prof Bernard Peter Agulhas CA (SA) for the opportunity to provide some thought provoking and leading industry perspectives to the panel of experts.   Some of the key points that were discussed included:   1. South Africa’s auditor liability regime   2. Legal accountability and liability of auditors   3. The regulatory framework and recent reforms   4. Insolvency proceedings and auditor involvement in financially distressed companies   5. The EU, UK, BRICS and other countries auditor regulations and liability frameworks   A key takeaway is that while the auditing profession in South Africa is highly regulated, there is some scope for reform and policy changes to align with recognised international best practice principles which can assist to expand South Africa’s policy framework.   I look forward to working closely with the team and contributing to this project within the coming months.   #UFS #AuditorLiability #Insolvency #SAICA #IRBA #BRIJHB #CoxYeats
