SAI Leadership drives expansion of sustainable performance audit practices in Asia-Pacific region:
Last month, teams from Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Mongolia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines gathered in Thimpu, Bhutan. Supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the INTOSAI Development Initiative (IDI), they dedicated themselves to enhancing sustainable performance audit practices and crafting impactful audit roadmaps. Their approach? Learning by doing, which emphasizes practical, hands-on training.
This commitment was further solidified at the IDI-ADB-SAI Leadership Forum in June, in Manila, where Auditors General joined their teams to brainstorm on leadership support and tone on the top required to bring the change. They envisioned the future of performance auditing in their SAIs over the next six years. They not only discussed their goals but also the concrete steps they would take to achieve them. It is not every day you see such high-caliber commitment and strategic foresight in one room!
SAI leaders also deserve recognition for their courage - they actively listened to the perspectives of their staff on what the staff expects of them by 2030. This open feedback session highlighted the leaders’ commitment to transparency and excellence in their institutions.
The leaders succinctly captured their collective vision with the three Cs: Competent, Committed, and Cognizant. They also envisioned their SAIs as centers of excellence in performance auditing and as strong advocates for performance-driven governance.
Stakeholder engagement was unanimously voted as the key to success, and SAI Philippines, with a boost from IDI, took the lead in setting the stage for vibrant discussions. With leaders from the other five SAIs in attendance, the dialogue expanded to include a broad spectrum of SAI Philippines stakeholders—members of parliament, representatives from key public entities, civil society organizations, and universities. This gathering was a masterclass in balancing mutual respect with open and frank dialogue. It was not just another meeting - it spotlighted new potential stakeholder coalitions, especially those between SAI Philippines and universities.
Proud to be a part of the team!
