Join our Future Skills Commission! Following the development of the Science Leadership Strategy and the Science Leadership Day in 2023, it was identified that IPEM had several challenges and responsibilities with regards to the future of our workforces, with a need for providing a platform and discussion forum to better understand, prioritise, design and develop the technical and professional workforce of physicists, engineers and technologists in medicine. A new Future Skills Commission is being established, which will deliver relevant actions to IPEM and other bodies to achieve this goal, ultimately leading to an increase in our offering to support the workforce and building our customer base. The Commission will, among other things, consider skills gaps (including multidisciplinary skillset and opportunities), discuss and consider changing technologies and outside factors which will affect the industry and consider the overall future clinical, academic and industrial settings for the workforce. The deadline to volunteer to join the Commission is Sunday 30th June and you can apply via our website here: https://lnkd.in/dct7xvRP

We are actively seeking colleagues to join our Quality panel pool for events in 23/24 and 24/25. Every year a number of approval and review events take place at Edinburgh Napier University and these are absolutely reliant on colleagues who volunteer their time and expertise to participate on these panels. Contributing to University-level events demonstrates institutional citizenship, supports capacity building and allows you to demonstrate contribution to a University-level decision-making group, shaping and influencing provision (of the provision under review and how you use your experience to influence and enhance practice within your own subject area). For staff considering seeking SFHEA or PFHEA, participating in, or convening an ILR (Institution Led Review) adds depth and elements of leadership to your role in teaching and/or supporting learning and, in particular, provides evidence against K6 within the UKPSF. Line managers, if you have colleagues considering working toward Senior or Principal Fellowship of Advance HE, please do encourage them to become panel members University-level quality events also require close work with external panel members – extending your professional network. The confidence and experienced gained in our internal events may also support you in securing similar positions beyond the University, supporting you to extend you external influence. We have a number of events coming up and we are actively seeking to extend and develop our pool of panel members (convenors; academic peers and professional services reps). If you are interested or want to know more - please contact quality@napier.ac.uk We are planning training for those interested in being Quality Panel members for module/programme approval and ILR (Institution Led Review) events. The provisional date planned is Thursday 12th October 2023. If you are interested in taking part in this training, we have a form (https://lnkd.in/e5kr7CJA) where you can register your interest in attending online, in-person or if another date would be necessary for you to participate. Please fill this in if you are interested. Will leave you with some feedback received from panel members in the past, in the comments below:

LDRD as a case study of successful R&D investment I was responsible for the Laboratory Directed Research and Development program at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 2007 to 2022. At last, with colleagues in the LDRD office, we have carried out a study of LDRD in the context of the R&D management literature, and submitted it to Research Policy. The paper is titled "Laboratory Directed Research and Development – a Case Study of Internal R&D Investment”, authored by Priedhorsky, William C.; Stonehill, Laura; Babilonia, Joany; Maestas, Andrea; Maestas, Kimberly; and Tyler, Alexandra. It can be found at at SSRN: https://lnkd.in/eFFGVi_K or https://lnkd.in/eCbtp_Pg. To my knowledge, this is the first attempt at peer-reviewed publication of the LDRD program. Our analysis helps better understand why LDRD is so successful and important - please have a look.

We have decided on our focus for 2024! ✅ PNN has finalized its strategic plan for 2024. In 2023, our focus was on international scholarship PhD candidates, where we delved into their working and living conditions, aiming to improve their experiences in the Netherlands. This year, we are pivoting towards sustainability, with a primary focus on the following: Sustainable PhD Trajectory: We aim to explore the practicality and challenges of completing PhD programs within the designated time frame, considering the responsibilities of candidates, institutions, and supervisors. Visibility and Advocacy: Enhancing PNN's profile among PhD candidates and policymakers, ensuring that the voice of the PhD community is heard and represented effectively. Relationship with Local PhD Organizations (POs): Strengthening ties with POs to better address the diverse needs of the PhD community and enhance collaborative efforts.
