Dr. Jacob Bloomfield, a historian of gender and sexuality, enters the ITBR to discuss the origin story of his interest in the history of drag performance, specifically male drag performance in Britain during the 1800s. Jacob explains his view that drag is not inherently a queer art form, despite its strong historical connections to LGBTQ+ communities. He argues that drag has had many different meanings and associations over time, and that it should be seen as an art form like any other, rather than being essentialized as solely a queer or progressive expression. Jacob discusses how drag has adapted and maintained mainstream popularity throughout history and argues that RuPaul's Drag Race should be seen as part of this ongoing tradition of drag's mainstream appeal, rather than as a new phenomenon. Jacob discusses the present-day backlash against drag, particularly from social conservatives, and how this echoes historical debates and critiques of drag as immoral or unsuitable for children. https://lnkd.in/eCh-Rbgc #pridemonth #lgbtq #drag #history #jacobbloomfield #andrewrimby #ivorytowerboilerroom #podcast

Research shows that 57% of transgender youth without parental support attempt suicide. But with parental support, that number drops to 4%!!! This Pride Month, let's recognize the powerful impact of a parent's love. As Susan Cottrell highlights in her impactful TED Talk, FreedHearts.org supports Christian parents in reconciling their faith with unconditional love for their LGBTQ children. Together, we can make a difference. 🌈❤️ [Image Description: Rainbow waves and pink quote marks behind the text, which reads: "Research shows that 57% of transgender youth without parental support attempt suicide. 🎬🌱The Belgian-French drama "Close" (2022) delves into the deep connection between Léo and Rémi, two 13-year-old boys. When their peers start to doubt the nature of their relationship, their intimate bond is suddenly destroyed, resulting in a terrible and emotional fallout. The movie explores themes of innocence, peer pressure, and the lasting effects of friendship while following Léo as he struggles with perplexity and guilt. 🌈The movie is significant for LGBTQ matters because it tackles the wonderful and sometimes misconstrued lines that separate same-sex friendships during adolescence. It draws attention to how young people's conduct and self-perception can be influenced by cultural norms and the fear of being labeled. "Close" is a great commentary on the difficulties of growing up and the nuanced undertones of LGBTQ experiences because of its moving and honest depiction of the emotional pain that can result from the junction of friendship and identity. 🌱The movie Close fulfills its goal of making a deep and enduring effect on viewers' hearts. #TheLinQFoundation #BringingCommunitiesTogether #LGBTQ+ #Close #MovieReview #Youth

Pansexual and Panromantic Visibility Day is an annual event to uplift the community and raise awareness of pansexuality and panromanticism, what they are and how they differ from other similar identities. It’s an important time to shine a light and educate people. Every year on May 24th. This is one of two main days for the pansexual community, the other being Pansexual and Panromantic Pride day on Dec 8th. Pansexuality is one of the identities on the LGBTQ+ spectrum of sexual orientation, which are all wonderful aspects of human diversity. It is, though, one of the less understood identities, because most people just don’t know what it means to be pansexual or the difference between pansexuality and bisexuality. According to LGBTQ+ organization, GLAAD, pansexual is defined as “a person who has the capacity to form enduring physical, romantic and/or emotional attractions to those of any or all genders.” #lgbtq #lgbtqeducation #LGBTQHistory #LGBTQRights #RainbowChamber #SACLGBTQ #Sacramento #SacramentoOG #TransRights #TransRightsAreHumanRights #PansexualVisibilityDay

What happens when love breaks barriers? In 2001, the Netherlands made history by becoming the first country to legalize same-sex marriage. This wasn’t just a legal victory; it was a triumph over decades of activism, resistance, and societal prejudice. LGBTQ+ activists faced significant opposition from politicians and religious groups. But through relentless effort, they pushed for change. The turning point came in 1998 when a government commission recommended legal recognition, leading to the law’s passage after intense debate. On April 1, 2001, four same-sex couples were married, marking a new era of equality. This moment didn’t just change the Netherlands—it inspired a global movement. At MIST LGBTQ Foundation, we celebrate this victory and continue to fight for equal rights for all. Progress is possible when we stand together. #LGBTQ #MarriageEquality #LoveIsLove #LGBTQRights #EqualRights #Pride #Inclusion #Netherlands #LGBTQHistory #HumanRights #MIST #EqualityForAll

#ThoughtfulThursday Happy 1st of Feb 🥳 lighter days are coming my UK friends.... This Month is LGBTQ+ history month and it got me thinking.... how much do you really know about LGBTQ+ history? If you’re a heterosexual woman over 30 like me, how much was you really taught growing up? Nothing, I know. How much have you learned since? It’s hard to pick out the correct info and concepts isn’t it? Every day this month I’m going to be sharing and sparking discussion on a different concept, detail or story centered on LGBTQ+ history, in my Facebook community here: https://lnkd.in/ez5uMN3k S*X education allows for more acceptance, more self-love and more understanding. It’s so important! Hope your month is as wonderful as you are 🌈 #lgbt #lgbtq #vickycrone #cherrisilk #femalesexuality #sexualityeducation #sexualityeducator #facebookgroup #sexandrelationships #relationships

Let’s get REAL📢: 🌈 Freedom vs Priviledge Pride month is a time of celebration, reflection, and advocacy. As we raise our flags and voices in solidarity, it’s essential to recognize the nuanced relationship between freedom and privilege – – and how they differ. Freedom is the inherent right of every individual to live authentically, love openly, and express their true selves without fear of discrimination or violence. For the LGBTQ+ community, freedom means breaking free from society, norms, and embracing our identities with pride. Privilege, on the other hand, is the unearned advantage, some individuals possess in society, often without even realizing it. Privilege can mean being able to hold hands with a partner in public without a second thought, or not having to worry about facing prejudice at work or home. It’s important to acknowledge that privilege isn’t about guilt but about awareness and responsibility. Freedom is a universal right, but not everyone enjoys it equally. By understanding and leveraging our privilege, we can work together to create a world where true freedom isn’t a privilege, but every reality for all. #LGBTQ #development #wellbeing #mentalhealth Photo image credit: unknown

In a significant move towards inclusivity, the Union Finance Ministry has clarified that there are no restrictions preventing individuals from the LGBTQ+ community from opening joint bank accounts or appointing their partners in queer relationships as nominees. This progressive clarification ensures that financial institutions recognize the rights of all individuals, irrespective of their sexual orientation or relationship status. As advocates of social justice, we celebrate this decision that brings us closer to financial equality for all. It’s a reminder that every step, no matter how small, is vital in the journey toward a more inclusive society. #LGBTQRights #FinancialInclusion #EqualityForAll #LegalUpdates #LGBTQ #LGBTQI #LGBTQIA #queer
