Recognizing this urgent moment for American higher education and our democracy, Carnegie Mellon University President Farnam Jahanian is joining 60 other college presidents of diverse institutions from across the country to advance higher education’s pivotal role in preparing students to be engaged citizens and to uphold free expression on campus. The College Presidents for Civic Preparedness, a consortium designed by Institute for Citizens & Scholars, includes participating presidents who are dedicated to preparing the next generation of well-informed, productively engaged, and committed citizens; defending free expression, civil discourse, and critical inquiry as essential civic norms; and increasing thoughtful engagement and better understanding by students for the effective functioning of our democracy. “In today's increasingly fractured world, promoting civic engagement and modeling civil discourse is precisely the role that higher education can and should play. Carnegie Mellon University is deeply committed to serving in this role and sees the work of supporting the exchange of knowledge and perspectives as foundational to our mission,” said CMU President Farnam Jahanian. I agree,I agree.... By liberal arts, we mean a broad-based education that aspires to send out into society an educated citizenry prepared to make its way responsibly in an ever-more complex and divided world. We worry that at many schools, students can fulfill all or most of their general education requirements and take any number of electives without having had a single meaningful discussion that is relevant to one’s political life as a citizen." "Over the past century, what made American higher education the best in the world is not its superiority in career training, but educating students for democratic citizenship, cultivating critical thinking and contributing to the personal growth of its students through self-creation. To revive American higher education, we need to reinvigorate these roots." https://lnkd.in/ehDJFTfn
New York Times Opinion on Instagram: "American higher education is facing bigger issues than culture wars, write Ezekiel J. Emanuel and Harun Küçük, faculty members at the University of Pennsylvania. One issue is that “there is almost no emphasis on shared courses among majors that explore and debate big questions about the meaning of equality, justice, patriotism, personal obligations, civic resp

🧠 Do you think this belief is alive in our higher education institutions today? Richard Feynman is describing a key principle in science that applies to other aspects of life as well: testing our ideas makes them stronger. The American Enterprise Institute releases a report today by JMC board member Wilfred McClay (Hillsdale College) on restoring civics in higher education: "The firm possession of civic knowledge, including knowledge of the institutions of American government and the history through which those institutions have traveled, is essential for any free and self-governing people. Any education worthy of the name should introduce the young to the whole of their political and cultural inheritance as Americans, enabling them to become literate and conversant in its many features and to take full advantage of all it has to offer them, both its privileges and its responsibilities." Today's cultural landscape is in large part the result of educational philosophies adopted over the past century. The transition to progressive and critical education has: Transformed college campuses into hubs of activism rather than centers of scholarship. Diminished knowledge and hindered the capacity for deep, critical thinking. Encouraged relativism, diminishing commitment to objective truth and standards of right and wrong. Promoted grade inflation and emotional indulgence, leading to high school graduates who are unprepared for the next stages of their lives. A return to classical education is the answer. Listen as Dan Gibson, CCA Head of School, shares with Columbus area pastors "The Fall and Rise of American Education: A Matter of Transcendence," explaining how schools have changed and why Christians in particular should desire a return to classical education in America.

Civic Thought and Leadership: A Higher Civics to Sustain American Constitutional Democracy - PDF: https://lnkd.in/gJHQFcYh Multiple civic crises facing American constitutional democracy—deepening political polarization and dysfunction, loss of confidence in major institutions and professions, and collapse of confidence in higher education—can be simultaneously redressed by restoring traditional civic education in universities and colleges. A nascent national reform in public universities, establishing departments of civic thought and leadership, reintroduces a blend of classical liberal arts and American civic education. This restores a core mission of truth-seeking and Socratic debate to universities, while providing the higher civics needed to perpetuate the American legal and constitutional order through non-partisan, non-ideological preparation of thoughtful citizens and leaders with the necessary civic knowledge and civic virtues, including commitment to the rule of law and American constitutionalism.
