Born and raised in Indianapolis, IN, Laura received her BA at University of North Texas and her MA at Ball State University. When Laura isn't helping patients, she is at home spending time with family and friends, binge watching cooking shows, or enjoying concerts. When asked why she chose a career in community health/ at JPCHC, she said "Everyone deserves access to quality mental health care, no matter their income or insurance status. I very much align with the mission of JPCHC and appreciate the different opportunities that the agency offers to provide psychological services in my home state." We're so happy to have you as part of the JPCHC team, Laura! #meettheteam #psychologist #communityhealthcare #staffmemberspotlight

In the words of Marion Bell, it is easy to get radicalized by just paying attention to experience. This is the case of many community health volunteers, child protection officers who on a daily basis interact with children who have experienced abuse. They have witnessed these experiences, lived with them, escalated to relevant authorities, followed up until it becomes a routine. Then kicks in compassion fatigue. A repetitive cycle constrained by bureaucratic process that prove exhausting. There has been emphasis on self care after handling mentally and emotionally difficult work. But it is important to recognize that self care is equally considered as luxury. Time is spent working multiple jobs, time is money and for most caregivers - the responsibility of taking care of their mental health is weighty. Too much of an ask. What then would be the solution? #protectchildrenonline #safeonline

There are many studies that seem to clearly indicate significant percentages of police calls are mental health calls in disguise. The move several police departments around the nation have made to partner with mental health professionals to better address these types of calls is a demonstration of true community outreach. The focus this week will be on changes in Oregon's drug laws, yet the persistent challenge we face at Blanchet House & Farm lies in addressing trauma and mental illness within the community we serve. For many, mental illness and substance use disorder are intertwined, with substance use often stemming from attempts to cope with trauma and untreated mental health issues. It's crucial to recognize that changing laws or deflecting individuals to addiction treatment will not alone address the root of our community's struggles. By addressing substance use without tackling underlying mental health concerns, we may only be scratching the surface of the support needed. We remain hopeful that deflection efforts will lead individuals to the treatment and recovery they seek. Blanchet House remains committed to promoting hope and connecting those in need with detox and treatment services. However, real progress will require significant changes in how we care for and support individuals with serious and persistent mental health challenges. (https://lnkd.in/gz7Vscu4)

After 12-months of work, our research report into the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on disabled people and carers in Sussex is now available. This crucial research was led by Independent Lives' community researchers Polly Bishop, Cara Redlich, and Gareth Shephard. They conducted surveys and face-to-face interviews with disabled people and carers across Sussex, with invaluable support from the University of Reading and the Scottish Community Development Centre. Our comprehensive study, funded by NHS Health Education England, paints a stark picture of the challenges faced by this vulnerable group: 1️⃣ Disabled people and carers are forced to make impossible choices between heating, eating, and care 2️⃣ Limited options are contributing to feelings of being trapped 3️⃣ Many individuals are merely surviving, not thriving 4️⃣ The crisis is having a devastating impact on mental health. Want to learn more? Have you ever heard of an IMCA? 💜 Independent Mental Capacity Advocates play a crucial role in decision-making for those who can't decide for themselves due to illness or disability. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 ensures individuals over 16 with limited capacity have the right to an IMCA. These advocates represent and protect their interests, ensuring decisions align with the person's best interests. When someone "lacks capacity", it means they can't make a decision at the time needed due to a disturbance of the mind or brain. IMCAs step in for crucial decisions like serious medical treatment, accommodation changes, and care reviews. An IMCA will meet the person, gather their views, consult with professionals and loved ones, challenge decisions if needed, and ensure the principles of the Mental Capacity Act are followed. If you feel as though you or someone you know needs an IMCA, then professionals like doctors or social workers can make referrals. Let's ensure everyone has a voice in decisions affecting their lives! You can access a referral form and more information on IMCA on our website. https://lnkd.in/e3cGWb-s #IMCA #Warrington #MentalCapacity #MentalHealth
