5 lessons I've learnt interviewing residents at luxury care homes 🎥👵 (number 5 is vital) 1. Be Patient ⏲️ Having a shoot plan for the day is great but sometimes things take longer then usual. It’s the residents home, so i’m on their time. Having a little slack in the schedule means the resident doesn't feel rushed. 2. Do your homework ✍️ Before hitting record I’ll ask the staff team what the resident particularly enjoys about living at their home.. Is it food? an activity? new friendships? Or a memorable experience? This is great to know beforehand so we can bring that out on video. 3. Bring a staff team member along 💁♀️ Having camera equipment all set up can be a little intimidating,. Inviting a trusted carer along in the room means the resident can feel more relaxed and always leads to some top notch banter which is great content to capture. 4. Don’t worry about going off script 📃 Sometimes a resident will answer a question but then go off topic. This is fine, in fact it can lead to some great indirect answers. Learning to go with the flow and gently navigate back to the question is the way to do it. It’s their interview after all. 5. Keep it fun! 🎉 Having the right energy on set is vital. Lots of smiles, jokes, and even a hug or two means we can create an atmosphere where the resident enjoy themselves. What do you think a job applicant observes when visiting your place of work? I changed job a month ago -and I’ll admit I am a bit nerdy when it comes to observing structures, interpersonal behavior and culture. The first time I visited the office (that I now call my work-home), I didn’t know I was in for more than coffee but all options were open. I was there a bit early and used the time to visit the restroom. Previously one of the areas I have been working with is customer experience and nudging behavior. So I come into the restroom and notice this: -the restroom is gender neutral (yes yes the sign still being binary but let’s zoom out and be positive -everybody can go in) -it is clean -there is a hook for my jacket -there is a shelf for placing a bag, phone, coffee -whatever you need -there is a sign informing that the hand towels will be recycled so please sort correct to help -and then there is a QR code to help me report it, if I should find anything not working or not ok Wow. Even before I was offered a coffee (and later a job) -I went into the conversation thinking “this is a cool place, and they have an eye for detail”. All I've seen so far is that it IS a great place. What do applicants see at your place? What images are on the walls (old guys in suits or more diverse images), old flyers with bingo night or competitions, language, accessibility, cleanliness at the coffee machine or restrooms, a flag left from Pride Month, quality of furniture in meeting rooms, dress code observed etc. Pssst -your coworkers see the same every day. Finding a cleaning company that suits your needs shouldn't be a difficult task. A good cleaning company will provide you a chunk of information that answers the majority of your questions when you initially enquire. You should be able to tell your cleaning service provider if you're struggling with particular tasks without feeling judged or uncomfortable You should be able to find lots of photos to showcase your new cleaner’s work. Being able to see the standard of past works gives confidence in the service you're booking. Although we all love to bargain, try not to be tempted by cheap prices when it comes to cleaning. A lot has happened, what with Covid, hybrid working and a change in position with company structures. People have changes too. New glasses, what we wear and how we look. Your old photo that was taken back when you started your old job is more than likely very much out of date? For a new start you might well need to reflect that? Begin creating a list of the "Best X" or "My Favorite" businesses you've discovered in your area. It's an invaluable customer service tool. You create it once and use it over and over. I used Excel for my list. List maintenance took me less than 10 minutes a month. For example, start making a list of your favorite... Veterinarian Grocery store for prepared meals Dentist Dermatologist Electrician Plumber Handy Man Urgent Care Center Hospital Golf Course or pro shop Pickel Ball courts or pro shop Tennis courts or pro shop Running or jogging trail or shoe store Beach Boat ramp Marina Lake for fishing Park for a picnic River for canoeing, kayaking or tubing Wine store Italian restaurant Seafood restaurant Steak restaurant Nail salon Hardware store Restaurant for weekend breakfasts Movie theater Florist HVAC company You get the idea. Actually, you can use any information that would be helpful to a new resident in your area. What information have you learned about your area that would have made your move to the area easier? It's the foresight and thoughtfulness that counts here. You're "looking out" for your new client or customer. Helping them "learn the ropes," "come up to speed" and "shorten the learning curve"  in their new hometown. I called my list "Tom's Favorites." How original is that! My clients raved about it. I even had non-customers come in and ask me for a copy of my list. Try it. You won't be disappointed. This is what worked for me. It may work for you, too.
