Combatting over tourism requires an understanding of how hotels can authentically integrate and support their local communities through thoughtful design. Hotels have the unique opportunity to act as supportive members of their larger communities. In my experience, after a quick, targeted visioning workshop, many hoteliers adapt their understanding of project value to extend beyond the digits within their proforma. Integrating a community identity into hotel design fosters stronger connections between guests and residents and creates momentum for further hyper-local investment. The result is a win-win situation where transient and permanent individuals are unified by a sense of membership founded on respect, contribution and ownership. Our goal is to advance the role of hotels as integral parts of their communities, creating spaces that support, represent, and enhance local identity. I’m eager to hear from other hospitality professionals and well-traveled individuals. Have you seen great examples of hotels that support their local communities through design interventions? What opportunities and challenges have you encountered? Let’s share our insights and experiences to promote stronger community integration in our industry. #HospitalityDesign #CommunityIntegration #LocalIdentity #SustainableDesign #overtourism

Namaste 🙏🏻 One of my earliest memories, that had a profound effect on me - Larnaca Airport toilet facilities. It must of been 1975ish. There were no toilet seats, instead a shower like grid with a hole in the centre with soap dish grooves on either side to stand feet on. Quite a stretch of the legs, balancing over a that, as a child. This was the same in my great grandmothers outhouse 'facilities', where you would often find a goat or a hen poking around from the yard, in & out of her 'loom' tapestry room. No electric in these outhouses, oil burners and candles were sufficient. My uncles had bees, so wax was plentiful. There was a spring water well in the yard, too. This was a time, when there was only one phone in most villages, a phone box, right outside the coffee shop. If it rang, the closest person would answer, and message would be sent for the recipient to get to the phone box. This is how we communicated from london to cyprus in the 70s🙏🏻 Every year, we came to Cyprus for the summer holidays. Every time, there was change. I remember, my parents upgrading my grandparents home. Toilet, INDOOR kitchen (that never got used for a few years) washing machine, TV, etc. Goodbye Morris Minor, hello 4 x 4 Nissan. Supermarkets everywhere. Lives of ordinary folk were more comfortable than ever before. As the landscape and skyline changed, motorways built, more development, more progress, the population grew, more industrial estates, etc, hence, growing cities have swallowed up the villages, pushing up property prices, another contribution to the socioeconomic & housing situation. Progress is great, but as Tracey Chapman sang '..looks very nice, put up a parking lot... you don't know what you got till its gone' (Fast Car, 1988) or in this case just More New. 🙏🏻 It's not surprising that a danger to losing the islands culture has come under attention and I believe this is a truly positive opportunity to introduce new incentives to encourage preserving the historical and agricultural heritage and environment that attracts millions of visitors and new citizens. As well as its captivating beauty, & accessible location, Cyprus 🇨🇾🕊 has such an important place in modern as well as ancient history. to lose its spiritual essence & consequentially be future doomed to a cultureless island saturated with skyscrapers, would be a shame. As in all things, there must be balance, equilibrium. There are families, small independent farmers, agriculturalists, horticulturalists, wine makers, and nature/healthy living enthusiasts, eco & environmentally aware & mindful who with the older generation strive to maintain the islands traditional way of life. Restoring traditional buildings used as accommodation has always been popular. In fact, more in demand than ever✨️ Let's encourage and celebrate that 🙏🏻 #offgrid #cyprusvillages #naturalliving Cyprus Tourism Organisation #Cyprus #culture Instawellbeing Sherylanne McLeod HEALERVERSE™️ Trish Kane, MBA

What does Finnish hospitality have to do with us in America, you might ask? I think a huge part of innovation in your business comes from what you can observe in the world at large. What I’m drawn to when I read about Finland is how they leverage the experiences unique to their local communities, which is why I’m such a huge proponent of taking part in the development of our own. What natural attractions do you have in your local area? Is there an interesting geological structure with an associated hike? Is there historical significance to the land that your community is built on? What are your local artisans producing? If you want people to stay with you, what makes you special? #Innovation #Community #Hospitality

The Cape Agulhas National Park upgrade, worth R54 million, is expected to enhance the visitor experience to the southernmost tip of Africa. Cape Town and South Africa's top attractions often require a mini-road trip to reach them. A day trip involving driving for more than three hours should essentially be an overnight stay - it makes for a better experience - if the surroundings and facilities match the intent to linger longer. Not all 'dorpies' or small towns are fully-fledged tourist attractions - but they have the potential to captivate even the most seasoned traveler. South Africa's tourism department seems confident that its 25 upgrade projects, and community development projects across seven of SA's nine provinces, including Agulhas can stimulate investment. I can think of Airbnb's boom outside South Africa's traditional tourist hot spots last year, as detailed in their SA economic impact report. The Silver Cloud just became the first cruise liner to dock in The Port of Saldanha up the West Coast—yet it's not brimming with drawcards like the V&A Waterfront and Table Bay. The opportunity is to create something different rather than just copy typical commercial blueprints. Culinary talents like Kobus van der Merwe and his world-class restaurant Wolfgat in Paternoster hint at what's possible. What other businesses or partnerships are playing a significant role in developing these off-the-beaten-path destinations? For those interested, I've added links to Discover Africa's update on Cape Agulhas' progress, Airbnb's 2023 SA Economic Impact report, Transnet's update on Silver Cloud in Saldanha, and Wolfgat in the comments.

The backlash against unbridled tourism is growing with many governments in Europe instituting restrictions on short term rentals or banning them altogether as they attempt to strike a balance between a reasonable level of tourism and a decent quality of life for residents. The most egregious offenders however, are the cruise ships, which stuff people on buses that later disgorge them by the hundreds onto the streets of quaint small towns and villages. These poor folks have no idea where they are and simply walk aimlessly through town for two or three hours without really contributing much to the local economy other than buying an occasional gelato. The tourist backlash is not a passing phase. It’s real and is gathering steam. One wonders what the impact may ultimately be on the broader hospitality sector. #tourism, #tourismbacklash, #hospitalityindustry

People are talking today and I'm going out on a limb to post about this -- This is my wheelhouse - we talk to a lot of businesses and organizations and I've watched the GPAEDC story since 1998. There are so many questions unanswered about this decision, which was apparently made in principle and in a closed council session nearly a year ago. Two potential bright lights are that the County is well organized and out ahead on this. I am very optimistic for the county and know they are in good hands. The Business Advisory Centre (BAC) going to Community Futures is great news and a great fit for their client base. A perfect fit really. But comments like the following are very very concerning for the tourism sector: "Marketing, sponsorship, and tourism will become Experience Peterborough. Economic development will be a single-source entity, because they have better things to do." - Jasbir Raina, City of Peterborough - this is very concerning for ANY business in the tourism sector in this city. It's still unclear how the business community was consulted on this and what the process was. There has been a year to consult and plan. We're also losing some very talented and experienced staff out of PKED. A few weeks ago I sat across from a young female business owner (one year in business). She told me that her business would NOT exist without the assistance, support and expertise of Madeleine Hurrell and the BAC. There are dozens and probably hundreds of stories like this. I'm not sure council knows these stories. And what of the businesses that will be impacted by the demise of the PKED? Was this discussed? Where was the feedback and consultation? Maybe someone can let me know when the meeting with the mayor with "ten SMALL businesses" happens. We'd love to cover that meeting.
City council unanimously endorses Peterborough's new economic development and tourism plan. By Bruce Head. With Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development dissolving at end of year, city will take services in-house for the first time in over 25 years. https://lnkd.in/esZ3fhup
