🎧 Music Monday 🎧 This week’s edition has been inspired after Nick Johnson recommended I read the book “Alchemy” by the brilliant and inspiring Rory Sutherland of Ogilvy in which he shares 30+ years of (mostly very surprising and fascinating) marketing and advertising experience and insight. It has become the soundtrack track to my morning hikes last week and is simply one of the best books I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying in a long time. The aim and premise of the book is, and I quote “What we need more of today is men and women who are not wedded to an overbearing system of thought. This book is an attempt not only to create them but also to give people permission to act and speak more freely in defiance of conventional assumptions. I hope it will free you slightly from the modern rationalist straight jacket and help you understand that many problems might be solved if we abandoned this obsession with universal contextual laws. Once free of this constraint you might have the freedom to generate magical ideas. Some of which will be silly and ineffective, but some of which might be invaluable.” He also states in the book “Be careful before calling something nonsense it might be non-sense or I think as Bob Dylan put it don’t criticise what you can’t understand” These are lyrics from the Dylan track “The Times They Are A-Changin’” and today’s tune to kick start the week. Whilst it was released in 1964 it has never been more relevant considering the past few years in the world of work! The definition of timeless. #MusicMonday #Innovation #FutureOfWork #GoodReads #Marketing #Advertising #Magic Blinktime

This morning something made me smile and muse. I was sat on the train listening to music in a fairly reflective mode. The track "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens started playing and a line struck me - "since the moment I could talk, I was ordered to listen". I've listened to this track many times before, but for whatever reason that line never jumped out to me. The first thing that made me smile was the playful dichotomy of it. I love playful and clever use of language that causes you to stop and think. The next reflection was on listening. As a coach i've learnt the art and the importance of deep, attentive listening, and, that it's so much harder than we think. Because it's true isn't it, we're given this amazing communication instrument and we want to use it, we want to share what we're thinking (well, some more than others 🙂). I suppose often our default is to think of speech (or writing) as our communication instrument, and not to think of listening as part of the equation. We miss the fact that to listen is to make what we communicate abundantly more meaningful. The 3rd thing it made me think of was my own upbringing ( I was raised in pubs), where my own dad would say to me that I could stand in the bar amongst customers, but I wasn't allowed to speak. I found it so frustrating, but how much did I learn and absorb because of it? How much a single song lyric can make you think if you're in the right frame of mind 🤔. Do you have your own thought provoking or memorable lyrics? https://lnkd.in/eBqTx_6v

➜ How I Found a New Singing Voice at 70 A dear friend of mind has a particular gift. He’s long been acclaimed as being the sort of singing voice that comes along less than once in a generation. His renditions of some of the songs he sang in Broadway shows are recognized as the defining recordings of those songs.
