Today I have completed a course in First Step Korean by Yonsei University. This course is an elementary-level Korean language course, consisting of 5 lessons with 4 units, and covers 4 skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. This was carried out for 5 weeks taught by Seung Hae Kang Seonsaengnim. So what I got from taking this course is 1. Read and write the Korean alphabet. 2. Communicate in Korean with basic expressions. 3. Learn basic knowledge on Korean culture. #KoreanCourse #FirstStepKorean #Coursera

In response to a question about teaching English in Japan ("Would you say you thrived? Did you develop a strategy to create your own business with what free time you had and the connections you made?"): I knew very little Japanese when I came here as a teacher. I was initially hired by an eikaiwa, then worked for a few different places. In the meantime, I made it a point to study Japanese simply because it's useful to know if you live here. I also wanted to read manga and play video games in Japanese. After five years I got reasonably fluent and I happened to learn about the opportunities in freelance translation, so I switched to that. That was 15 years ago. I generally enjoy translation and it pays much, much more than teaching. My point is that I suggest that if you do teach English here, keep learning about things that interest you because you never know what opportunities they may open up. Also, don't let the losers who are stuck in teaching jobs they hate because they haven't bothered to acquire any other marketable skills poison you with their negativity about everything related to Japan. Ignore them and leave them behind!
Two years after graduation, with four years substitute teaching experience and 3 semesters university Japanese, I applied to the JET program and James English but failed to get in, before ultimately teaching in South Korea. In 2018 and 2019 tried Gaijinpot with no success. I watched videos like these occasionally to hear personal experiences of teachers in Japan. For you who have taught in Japan, I’d like you to weigh in. Would you say you thrived? Did you develop a strategy to create your own business with what free time you had and the connections you made? #networking #assimilation #enterprise https://lnkd.in/gNyh-9DT
