Specialist Family Physician | Primary Care Clinical Lead |Chairman, Primary Care/IFHAS Committee, Mediclinic Abu Dhabi & Al Ain Region | Medical Director, Mediclinic Marwah | Member, DOH Primary Care Clinical Taskforce
Have you ever wondered why specialized primary health care physicians are called Family Physicians? Or why primary health care clinics are sometimes referred to as family practice? I've been pondering these questions for a while now, and the answers were not provided back in medical school. Family physicians employ unique methods in approaching their patients, offering holistic, personalized, and patient-centered care. They consider every aspect of their patients' lives – from socioeconomic status to cultural beliefs – in their treatment approach. This realization led me to understand that the relationship primary care physicians have with their patients is akin to a family bond, a genuine connection in health and sickness. I firmly believe that to deliver highly effective service, all primary care professionals – whether clinical or non-clinical staff, operational or administrative personnel, leaders, and managers – should uphold this kind of relationship with their patients. Primary care serves as not only the first point of contact when accessing healthcare but also as the most essential one. Let's continue to prioritize patient-centered care in primary health settings for a healthier and more connected community. #PrimaryCare #FamilyPhysicians #PatientCenteredCare

Chief Executive Officer | Pediatric Healthcare Advocate | Founder of Child Life On Call | Expert in Family-Centered Care and Digital Health Innovation
Family-centered care gets trumped when “medical decisions” are at play. So, how can organizations ensure every clinician implements family-centered care 100% of the time: In healthcare, we act as if the two can’t live in harmony: That prioritizing the needs of the family is impossible when real medical care needs to take place. This is completely false, and I’m going to give you 3 myths that accelerate this destructive narrative in healthcare, along with 3 simple alternative statements that clinicians can use to transform the way they care for patients (and families). 👉 First myth: Family-centered care means the family is always right. The truth: Families will tell you firsthand how many mistakes they’ve made or gut feelings they’ve ignored. What is actually happening for the family when they make statements the care team disagrees with, is that they are attempting to reconcile their experience, understanding and emotions into the best possible solution that they can come up with. New narrative: Family-centered care means the family has a right to truly understand what is at stake with any and all decisions of their loved one. 👉Second myth: Family-centered care is another part of my job I don’t have time for. The truth: The care team hasn’t been properly trained on how family-centered care enhances their workflow and efficiency. When loved ones are sought for as the expert on the patient, things actually speed up, not slow down. New narrative: Family-centered care makes my workflow more efficient. 👉Third myth: Family-centered care is someone else’s job. The truth: One interaction with a disgruntled care team member can indefinitely ruin future medical experiences for years to come. Parents on the Child Life On Call podcast relive these moments during our interviews every single week. New narrative: Family-centered care is not a job, it’s at the core of all of my duties. Integrating these new narratives and properly training all staff from the cafeteria workers to the operating room scrub tech is essential for integrating family-centered care into an organization, which is at the heart of what the child life profession does every single day. #familycenteredcare #digitalhealth #patientexperience #childlifeservices
