New appointment 👏 - Kraft Heinz names Marta Pilczuk as the new Managing Director for #UK & #Ireland. Pilczuk steps into the role after nearly 12 years with Kraft Heinz, most recently as Managing Director for #Poland. During her tenure, she drove significant growth in the region by strengthening innovation pipelines and enhancing manufacturing capabilities. Why employees talking about Nespresso and not Nestlé Nespresso, Mr. Freixe & Mr. Bulcke? This distinction raises crucial questions about brand identity, innovation and engagement within the company. When leaders and employees do not receive what they truly need in an organization, they tend to seek alternatives. UBut what do people actually need in a company to grow, to innovate and to perform? From neuroscience, we know that it boils down to two fundamental experiences we all encounter in early childhood, which remain deeply rooted and emotional throughout our lives. The first experience is the longing for connection. Even as embryos, we were connected to our mothers via the umbilical cord, forming a profound sense of belonging. This deep emotional connection fosters a need for inclusion that continues into adulthood and is essential in the workplace. When employees feel disconnected from the company or its purpose, they naturally gravitate toward other narratives. The second critical experience is the need for growth. Just as we learned to stand on our own as children, people desire opportunities to develop and expand their skills in the workplace. If these growth opportunities are absent, employees may seek compensation through alternative means, such as higher salaries or other forms of fulfillment outside their main work. The issue is that genuine connection and growth cannot be mandated or outsourced through consultants; they stem from an authentic internal attitude and stability within the organization. Constantly transferring senior executives from one position to another undermines this stability and often serves to feed their ego rather than nurture the true leadership qualities necessary to foster a cohesive and engaged workforce. As we discuss Nespresso's narrative and its appeal, it is also crucial to watch out for companies that claim to be sustainable but do not follow through on that promise. True sustainability goes beyond marketing slogans; it demands a comprehensive commitment to ethical practices throughout the supply chain, from sourcing to production and beyond. While Nespresso has made strides in promoting itself as a premium and sustainable coffee brand, it is essential to assess whether its practices really align across the entire value chain with these ideals, and in the context with Nestlé. Consumers and employees alike should critically evaluate the authenticity of sustainability claims and support companies that demonstrate genuine commitment to creating positive social and environmental impact. In a world where consumers are increasingly informed and concerned about ethical practices, organizations must align their actions with the values they promote, ensuring that they foster a workplace where both connection and growth are prioritized alongside genuine sustainability. This store manager at Tesco should be identified as a future leader in the company. Why? It's true, he went against company policy, It's true, it might be that legally the customer will have a bad experience here. However, he feels like an owner of the company. He takes it to heart, and he shows values, responsibility and care, to other customers that are beyond this story. The biggest thing is that he has a world view and values that he stands for and willing to fight for, for the benefit of the company and the other customers. In most companies, this manager, will be punished, but in great companies great leaders would take him and mentor him, to grow as a future leader. “Sometimes, it’s the smallest gestures that leave the deepest impact.” A decade ago, during my time at PepsiCo, I managed a vibrant and hardworking team of salespeople. The hours were grueling 12 to 15 hours a day, sometimes more during month-ends. Morning gate meetings started sharp at 8 AM, regardless of how late we had wrapped up the previous night. The pressure was relentless, the targets ambitious, and the pace unforgiving. Yet, in the midst of all this intensity, I decided to start a small tradition. On the 1st of every month, I would distribute Cadbury Dairy Milk bars to the team, whether or not we hit our targets. Inspired by the tagline “Kuch Meetha Ho Jaaye,” it was my way of acknowledging their effort, resilience and celebrating their spirit regardless of the outcome. It didn’t take long for it to turn into something special. The team began to look forward to it. They’d laugh and say, “Aaj number kar lo, kal Prashant Sir Cadbury le aayenge.” Last Thursday, I ran into a few of those very salesmen, a decade since we last worked together. We shared laughter, stories, and memories. One of them joked, “Sir, lagta hai Cadbury ab bahut mehngi ho gayi, aapke jaane ke baad koi nahi laata" It struck me then: a small act of appreciation, no matter how simple, can leave an indelible mark on people. It wasn’t just the chocolate, it was the shared moment of joy, and the feeling of being valued. Leadership isn’t always about grand gestures or big strategies. Often, it’s the small, thoughtful acts that truly make people feel seen, respected, and cared for. So, to all leaders out there: Take a moment to celebrate your people. It doesn’t have to be big.
