Since Spicer Landfill became a Tyrewise location at the start of September, more than 1100 used tyres have been dropped off. Ka pai Porirua! 👏 That adds up to more than 13 tonnes of used tyres diverted from the landfill and kept out of our streams and harbour. As part of the nationwide product stewardship scheme, these tyres will be sent to different companies where they will gain a new life as playground matting, sportsgrounds or in cement production. Other benefits we’ve seen so far at Spicer Landfill include space freed up that was previously used for stockpiling old tyres, and time that went towards shredding and burying the tyres can now be focused elsewhere. Up to five old tyres can be dropped off at a time at Spicer Landfill free of charge (by the public - no businesses sorry!), so long as the tyres are clean and do not have rims. https://lnkd.in/gspvfzHz

We get excited about any new piece of kit that joins our growing fleet of innovative recycling equipment, but none more so than our Arjes Titan 900 (the big orange beast). And it’s not just because we want to show off our latest purchase, although why wouldn’t we! It’s really because of what it can do in terms of advancing the Northern Territory’s #CircularEconomy, and the journey we’ve had from visiting the ARJES - Recycling Innovation manufacturers in Germany over 18 months ago to this incredible machine - the very first of its kind in Australia - finally arriving right here in Darwin. So why is it so special? Well, this one machine has the capability to recycle four different waste streams – concrete, tyres, green waste and light steel such as car bodies. And that means it’s a viable option for regional and remote recycling as well as increasing our capacity to service the greater Darwin region from our newly opened NTEX Code Red resource recovery and recycling facility at East Arm (more to come about that in future posts!). It's been very exciting to see the interest in this technology and our capability to turn waste concrete into high specification aggregate for reuse back in the civil construction industry. New technology expanding the limits on recycling to make new products while reducing the need for virigin materials and the carbon footprint.

We had a great clean-up crew turn up for the recent Plastics New Zealand Operation Clean-up events in Rotorua. The crew traversed 14.6km of streets feeding stormwater into the main drain entering Puarenga Stream recovering: ♻12kg of small bits of plastic to go to landfill  ♻56 aluminium cans to go into the “Cans for Trees” programme ♻A bin of recyclable bottles ♻6 glass bottles and a small jar for recycling ♻A pile of metal for metal recycling ♻A couple of vaping devices ♻An umbrella top which might find another use as a shopping bag after washing. ♻A beanie that will head to the second-hand shop after a clean. ♻A couple of bike tubes for reuse when stretch is required for tying up a tree. ♻Some larger bits of plastic and a pillow which were placed in the rubbish bin.  ♻And two shopping trolleys Operation Clean-Up Week isn’t just about tidying up for a day – it’s about coming together as an industry to show commitment to protecting our environment and communities. #plasticsNZ #cleanup #rubbish #environment #sustainability

Did you know that asphalt is the most recycled product in the United States? Close to 100 million tons of asphalt are reclaimed and recycled every year! It’s a good thing, because if we did not recycle asphalt, there would be about 60 million cubic yards of landfill space taken up by old asphalt every year. Recycling of this material protects the environment by reducing quarrying, mining and oil consumption. Recycling reduces consumption of fuel, machinery, transportation and labor as well as protecting the scarce natural resources of aggregate and asphalt. Ultimately this keeps many millions of tons of collected material out of our landfills. Another earth-friendly benefit of asphalt paving is that it requires 20% less energy to install asphalt paving compared to other paving materials. Because asphalt is beneficial to vehicle efficiency, it lowers the potential impact on the environment. Less friction means improved longevity for the road, reduced vehicle maintenance costs, lessened carbon dioxide emissions, and improvements to fuel economy. This is particularly significant considering the 275+ million vehicles in operation on US roads.
