As I reflect on two previous podcast interviews, with Dr. Pam Chatman and Keith "The Prince of the Delta Blues" Johnson, I saw a connection. On one hand, Pam’s work focuses on serving the people of the Delta. On the other hand, Keith’s story, in part, captures the spirit of someone who is doing as much as he possibly can not to be one the people Pam helps. Both Pam and Keith hail from the Delta and neither looks down their nose at their fellow Delta native. Perhaps, it could be said that Pam represents hopefulness and support and that Keith represents what happens when hope, opportunity, and drive come together. Now, consider these other two aspects of their stories. In Keith’s day job, he works in HR at a casino in Tunica (By night, he is actually a blue guitarist and is known as the “Prince of the Delta Blues). He shared how he works to support the employees, who are usually Delta residents, to make sure they know how the organization can support them when they experience challenges that impact how they show up at work. Sometimes, it is impossible to maintain a boundary between your personal and work life. Meanwhile, Pam focuses on getting people what they need, whether it is resources to pay bills, food, or transportation to work. I can imagine that they hear heart-wrenching stories on a regular basis. By the same token, their personal journeys attest that they are intimately familiar with some of the circumstances that they hear. As they do the work that they do, I also imagine that there are times wherein they feel torn because we know there have to be times when they are unable to help everybody who requests help. Whether in nonprofit settings or otherwise, how do leaders grapple with realities like these and avoid burnout? Additionally, if you are a leader in an emotionally demanding context, how do you know you are burning out before hit the wall? What do you do to manage your physical and mental health? #allleadershipispersonal #valuesbasedleadership #nonprofitleadership

If you have 3 minutes, please read: Let’s talk about The Bronze medal mindset. As I have told you before, I love the Mel Robbins Podcast. Recently she had an episode titled “The Bronze medial mindset.” It has been studied and confirmed that Bronze medalist are usually happier than Gold and Silver medalist. Please go listen for yourself when you get a chance, it’s an amazing episode. I have 6 total takeaways, I will share 3 today and the other 3 tomorrow. These are in no particular order: 1. Know exactly what you want. Write down in detail what you want. If you’re job searching, write down the exact title and pay you want. Be ready to walk away from anything that isn’t exactly what you wrote down. If you want to write a book, who is your target audience? What topic do you want to write about? Don’t be afraid to go after exactly what you want in life. When you write it down subconsciously and consciously, you will work towards that goal. 2. Strength is just as much mental as it is physical. How are you training your mind to be aligned with your goals and how are you giving yourself mental relief? I’m sure many of us know mental exhaustion is real and can be just as detrimental as physical exhaustion. Do you meditate? Do you workout? Do you go to therapy? Have you figured out what mental strength looks like for you? 3. Don’t Just visualize your win, visualize the work it will take to get there. For job seekers, don’t just daydream about getting that amazing job offer. Daydream about revising your resume, strengthening the skills you need to land that job, see yourself speaking to your mentor about how to get out of your comfort zone. Success does not come without work. Have you heard “Hard work will out work talent, if talent don’t work hard?” This means you can have a natural talent for a specific skill, but if you aren’t constantly working to enhance the talent and get in the rooms that can take you to the next level, someone else out there is willing to do the work. Hard work will out work talent. If this resonates with you, please share. Someone else in your network may need this. #affirmations #inspiration

Certified High-Performance Career Coach | Keynote Speaker | Empowering You to Advance Your Career with Intention and Confidence
🎙️ Exciting news! 🎉 In the latest episode of my podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Cassie Spencer who shared some incredible insights on career development and the power of networking. Here are three key takeaways from our conversation: 1️⃣ The importance of having a support system: Cassie emphasized the value of surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who can provide guidance, advice, and a fresh perspective. Whether it's mentors, friends, or colleagues, having a sounding board to bounce ideas off of can be invaluable in navigating the corporate world. Remember, success in our careers is often a collaborative effort, and having a strong support system can make all the difference. 2️⃣ The power of seeking out different perspectives: While it's great to have friends and family members to rely on for advice, Cassie highlighted the importance of seeking unbiased, subject-matter expert opinions. As the corporate landscape continues to evolve, what worked for someone else may not necessarily be the best approach for you. By seeking out diverse perspectives, you can gain new insights and make more informed decisions about your career path. 3️⃣ Helping others overcome career stagnation: Cassie's passion lies in helping individuals who feel stuck in their careers and are yearning for growth. Whether it's moving up the corporate ladder, transitioning to a new role, or even exploring a completely different career path, our guest is dedicated to providing support and guidance to those who are seeking positive change. Remember, it's never too late to pursue your dreams and find fulfillment in your work. I highly recommend listening to this episode if you're looking for practical tips, career advice, and inspiration to take your professional journey to the next level. Career Coach | Consultant | Trainer | Speaker | Author: "Helping talented people find soul-satisfying work; and employers attract, inspire, and develop their talent."
If you know someone who is feeling beleaguered by their job search, here's a great perspective to share with them. It comes from Sonal Bahl's ezine: "Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go" - Unknown If you've applied to countless jobs, interviewed and interviewed some more, and not received a single offer.. .basically...you know in your heart of hearts that you have left no stone unturned, right? What more is there left to do? You have two choices: a. focus on the controllables: volunteer your time with those less fortunate, spend time outdoors, follow up with those who haven't got back to you...and ... surrender. Remembering that you are enough, just as you are. b. Let the frustration take center stage. This will show up in your behaviour, with hurried decisions stemming from fear and anxiety. When we are in a challenging situation, making option 'a' above work is a DAILY commitment. You've got to trust the timing, the right role is coming for you. If you remember good ol' Stephen Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, one of the seven habits is that they focus on things they can control (and influence) and NOT the things they can do nothing about. Besides the fact that doing this helps us be more effective, it also impacts our emotional state/mental health, as feeling helpless--which focusing on things we can't control or influence leads to--creates a physiological state which makes it harder and harder to take action. Here's one other concept that can really help...Minimal Viable Action...a term I heard from Mark Manson (who also has a great ezine). If you're feeling stuck, ask yourself "What's the smallest thing I can do right now that moves me forward?" P.S. Also...check out Sonal's podcast https://lnkd.in/gyWkhfRW where you can hear inspiring stories about how other people navigated their job search. #jobsearch #jobsearchadvice #careeradvice #mindset

If you could never work in your chosen career again, would you be relieved, or would you be disappointed? On the latest #findingbrave podcast episode we chat with Dr. Tessa West, author of Jerks at Work and Job Therapy: Finding Work That Works for You. Tessa is a leading expert on the science of social relationships, and a researcher focusing on how to improve communication between employees, bosses, and hiring professionals. Tune is as Tessa shares key insights from Job Therapy and we explore what it might look like to reframe your career by thinking of it as you would a romantic relationship or partnership. She also shares how feeling that she was being a jerk to her coworkers sparked the concept of her first book before unpacking the five forms of job dissatisfaction and their true roots. We further discuss the importance of understanding that we only see the surface of the lives of others (and make many erroneous judgments about what other people have that we don’t) and why identifying your own core transferrable skills is a superpower. In closing, she shares a powerful tip on truly getting to know yourself in meaningful and productive ways. Tessa’s grounded perspective in research paired with acute self-awareness makes for deeply insightful listening and learning.
