📖 Today is National Read a Book Day 👏 Graham Scott has given his top recommendation for a good book to read. ➡ Happiness by Design – Finding pleasure and purpose in everyday life. Professor Paul Dolan. I’ve followed the work of Professor Paul Dolan for a number of years. A real insight into understanding the basis of our happiness. I completely relate to the two areas of pleasure and purpose and achieving the right balance. I would encourage everyone to follow his work..... Perhaps we could persuade him to support an LDC event 👀 https://lnkd.in/ezVtFaDw #ProfessorPaulDolan #ReadABook #Reading

This book is changing my philosophy of work. It is a book about walking and how famous philosophers and poets went about it. It goes deep into walking and why it is essential to us. It tells us that our best ideas happen when we move aimlessly in a park, a city or a mountain. Nietzsche had his most creative period when he abandoned himself to walking rather than sitting at a desk. It tells us that we are meant to move and be free — Can you feel that breeze on your face already? But it is also a book about slowing down and being mindful, so yes, take a deep breath at work and slow down. Our best work happens when we are able to dedicate enough time to a task. Our best work happens when we think before taking action. It has never been about a mindless sprint. It always has been about doing a good job at whatever we are doing. #philosophy #worklifebalance #mentalhealth

Are you addicted to crossing things off your to-do list? Does some part of you believe, at some point, it WILL be possible to "get it all done" so that you can finally get around to all those more edifying/enjoyable things you aspire to do (before you die?!) Then THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! As an interculturalist I'm well aware that people's relationship with Time is not the same everywhere. Some people are inclined to be more 'doing' than 'being'. Some value punctuality more than others. Some people revel in multi-tasking, others not so much. Nevertheless, increasing numbers of people all over the world have bought into the idea that productivity is the route to all happiness. And yet somehow, despite all the technology at our fingertips designed to make things easier, there is always more to do. The beauty of this book, Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman, is that it takes a different approach to this problem by showing you how to entirely re-frame how you think about Time. It starts, counter-intuitively, by encouraging you to admit defeat. There's more to it than that of course (and I've not yet quite finished it all...haven't had enough time, ha!) but if this resonates at all - I urge you to have a read. I've genuinely found it therapeutic. What do you do when you have 'too much to do and too little time'? #productivity #wellbeing #culture #behaviouralpreferences #culturalvalues

🌼Some powerful lesson from the book "How to Live an Extraordinary Life" by @Anthony Pompliano🌼 In this book, Anthony Pompliano writes 65 letters to his children with inspiring lessons on how to succeed in business, have great relationships, do well with money, and live a healthier and happier life. 🌼Sharing some wonderful messages from the book🌼 🎯Learn to communicate like your career depends on it. It is the one skill that remains valuable regardless of the industry or job you pursue. 🎯Consistency is incredibly valuable. Consistency is a superpower. Excellence breeds excellence. 🎯Watch someone's daily habits today and you will understand what their future looks like. 🎯The more you help other people become successful, the more success finds you. 🎯The smartest people I know: 1. Obsessively read books. 2. Pursue new mental models. 3. Enjoy intelligent discourse. 4. Quickly admit when they're wrong. 5. Are comfortable changing their opinion. 6. Surround themselves with intelligence. 7. Seek to understand every perspective on a topic. 🎯Effort creates action. Action creates results. 🎯Your life changes once you realize that no one else's opinion matters as long as you know who you are. 🎯There are few things more enjoyable than a long walk outside with your family 🎯Letters serve as time capsules for all that you have learned and all that you have yet to learn. #booksreview #inspiration #motivation #linkedindaily #linkedincontent #linkedinuser #networking #connections

I read in the paper that some academics are complaining that students, including some studying literature, rarely read long books. It seems they prefer short books, poems, and extracts. As always, there's probably lots of reasons why this is untrue (our tendency to exaggeration, and a general sense - shared by every generation since records began - that things were better in our day). It is also easy to blame short attention spans on everything from tv to smartphones. But whatever the reason, if it's true, then it's a real shame. I've just totted up my reading so far this year. I counted 31 books. Some were relatively short and easy, others were long, non-fiction; I also read Olivia Manning's brilliant Levant trilogy. I tell you this not to boast nor show off; rather, it is an example of the choices that we make in our lives. I actively choose to read books all the time. As a result I choose not to watch much TV (apart from rugby, of course). Do I miss out from not watching TV every day? Undoubtedly. Do I benefit hugely from reading? Of course. Life is all about making choices. We balance alternatives and prioritise. The aim should be to live as rich and rewarding life as we can. For me reading is a mainstay of my Three Piece Life philosophy. It is one of my simple pleasures. I choose to rule it in. And as for long books going out of fashion, my current book on the go is Stendhal's The Red and the Black, all 500+ pages of it. As I sat down to start reading it my wife pulled her 40 yr-old copy off the bookshelves. Unlike my version, her's was in the original French! Now that really is showing off. #threepiecelife #burnout #burnoutcoaching #leadershipdevelopment #books #reading

We are seeing a pattern developing... 💡 In our book, Focused As A Bee, Sydney and I share six "permissions" we believe you must give yourself in order to improve your focus. ✔️ One permission that is an "aha" for many people, as mentioned in the review below, is the permission to be "unavailable." We have developed a cultural norm that we should be available to everyone all the time, and that to not be available is a sign of not being helpful or caring. 📌We believe just the opposite is true. If you are always available you aren't able to accomplish the important "thinking work" you need to do on your own. You then aren't as well-prepared to lead or manage well. You exhaust yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally and have little to give others. ✳️ Know that when we say be unavailable it doesn't mean in a crisis situation or even for long periods of time. It's simply giving yourself some space to think and renew your energy for what is to come. ❓What's the permission you need to give yourself to improve your focus on your most important tasks? The TED Conferences talk that Eric Rugundu references below is well worth 12 minutes of your time. Watch and enjoy his compelling proposition on happiness, how to feel better at work and in general. (https://lnkd.in/edAHVM3F)

Whenever I’m asked to recommend a helpful book, my first choice is almost always “The Happiness Advantage” (https://lnkd.in/edAHVM3F), written by the amazing author, Shawn Achor. This little gem is only 250 pages and full of entertaining anecdotes based on academic research. Here’s a little taste to get you started: “Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be more successful, and if we are more successful, then we’ll be happy. But recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology have shown that this formula is actually backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around.” If you’re so busy that you don’t have time to read Shawn’s book, I highly recommend his hilarious TED talk. Go on, give yourself the gift of happiness with this 12-minute video: https://lnkd.in/eRcj9_f3
