Success as a nonprofit is all about community partnership! We were provided the opportunity for a donation of 20+ suitcases (and a full tub of toiletries); which, is not our exact "lane" when working with foster youth; so, we brought them to the amazing OCJ Kids for foster youth aging out of group homes. Dang, community - you knock our socks off! Olympic Angels volunteer send monthly reports letting us know about purchases made to support the families and youth they are matched with. Support is tailored to meet specific needs: 🚙 if a child wants to go to a summer camp - not only will they help pay for the camp, they'll give rides to make life easier for the caregiver 🛏️ if a caregiver suddenly takes in kids they weren't prepared for, volunteers have helped purchase beds - and then actually put them together Every report is different and unique - but the one factor that is always consistent is their commitment and generosity. 🤩 That $25,077 is the amount so far that was reported by volunteers going straight to families and youth in foster care community, never passing through Olympic Angels. Neighbors helping neighbors. $143,932 is the in-kind value that includes volunteer hours, miles driven by volunteers, and tangible donations from local businesses that directly benefit the foster care community. >> Imagine aging out of foster care, being led to a program that will get you into an apartment (if you’re one of the few fortunate to enough to qualify), then being dropped off at the empty apartment completely alone. No furniture. No groceries. No cookware or dishes. No toiletries. No family. The amount of times we’ve heard the phrase “I just wish I had parents or family to help me” is heart breaking. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… IT IS OUR (the community’s) RESPONSIBILITY TO STEP IN for the kids in the foster system. Whether our role is show up for them ourselves, or to help the people that can show up for them. This is OUR responsibility. We want to help meet the physical need, but we also have made contacts and friends that will help them with things like job placement or even banking/financial mentorship. There are those amongst us - low key, often silent, shunning attention - just quietly making the kind of difference that genuinely transforms lives and communities. Vicki Street - will (literally hate) the attention she gets. But it would be unjust not to acknowledge the years, decades of selfless effort, commitment and sacrifice that has goes into what it takes to bring hope, optimism, fun, togetherness and dignity to so many families and children. Alongside the founder (a true and irrepressible force of nature like no other) Karen, and the other trustees and parents - as a team of volunteers; they have helped transform the lives of many. 1000's of unpaid hours invested into bid writing, fund raising, community events - meetings/AGM's, whipping up support and sponsorship - Christmas parties, summer trips, accessible and inclusive events, sports and community based activities - for over 20 years. Our children have directly benefited - and still benefit from LS29's commitment to lifelong friendships and support. That's an impressive level of bandwidth - raising four children - including those with additional needs, helping to run a busy and demanding business + still making time to give back, make a difference There're are those that do.
