I really enjoy working the DIB. Defending the nation, helping businesses protect themselves and creating some amazing relationships. It’s all good. But sometimes, it seems the military operates in a parallel universe where acronyms are their own language? Sometimes, it feels like deciphering a secret code that could rival a treasure map. And sometimes, it just makes me laugh. DISCO - Deployable IS Control Officer. No, this isn't the person who gets the dance party started, but they might just be the life of the tactical party, ensuring our info systems are groovy and secure. DRBOB - Discreet Reseal of Bag, Ordnance, or Box. Imagine calling someone up in a panic because your bag of snacks exploded and needing the DRBOB on the double. FARP - Forward Arming and Refueling Point. Sounds like where we’d send our vehicles for a quick energy drink and some heavy artillery, right? Picture a pit stop, but with more firepower and less tire-changing. And my favorite… BLT - Battalion Landing Team. Sorry to disappoint, but this BLT has nothing to do with bacon, lettuce, or tomatoes, and makes me want to go to a diner. As an historic aside.... Those familiar with the history of US nuclear intelligence operations 1946- 1950 (esp Douglas Mackiernan- CIA- Xinjiang) know about early programs regarding "long range detection of nuclear explosions". In the pre-satellite era. As part of a multi front, global effort, The US fielded detection devices, of different types (sound) at US Embassies in Russia-facing-third countries, like China, Germany etc. as well as radioactive particle filters aboard a fleet of planes flying near the borders. That's the 'long range' history behind what you read here--circa 1980's. Since US technical means 1949 provided first detection of Russia's first nuke test, technicians would have at least aspired, in the 1980's, to go one better and detect the material it self before explosion. Thats what I read in the mention of NPB in this declassified document. See "Spying without Spies" regarding birth of such national technical means. ... and "Into Tibet" about Mackiernan's operation.
