Behind every strong foundation is a vision—and every vision starts with the raw materials that make it possible. Today, I’m honored to oversee this truckload of steel beams (with more products to be added this evening), each one destined to play a role in building not just a structure, but someone’s dream home. These beams will support walls that hold family photos, roofs that offer shelter, and rooms that echo with laughter and love. It’s incredible to witness the journey from raw materials to a finished home—a place where memories will be made, stories will unfold, and futures will be built. This work is so much more than construction; it’s about shaping spaces that bring people together. Grateful for every partnership and the trust that brings us to moments like these. Here’s to building with heart and strength, one beam at a time. If you’re looking to source steel for your next commercial, residential, or industrial project, reach out—let’s build something incredible together! Attending the #AdvancingMassTimber Conference in Nashville this week was a powerful reminder of how the building industry continues to evolve with #masstimber taking center stage as an innovative and sustainable solution. I left with three major takeaways: 1. Use Materials For Their Best Purpose Mass timber is an incredible material, but that doesn’t mean it has to stand alone. Incorporating mass timber where it makes sense creates hybrid structures that maximize the strength of each material. 2. Moisture is the New Fire While fire safety has always been a priority in wood building design, we must now give equal attention to moisture management. Effective moisture control—during design, construction, and throughout the building’s life—is essential for the long-term performance and durability of mass timber structures. 3. Bring Everyone to the Table Early Collaboration between all project stakeholders—owners, architects, engineers, AHJ, suppliers, fabricators, and contractors—is critical. Open communication from design through to construction helps navigate challenges, from supply chain disruptions to meeting code requirements. The most successful case studies were those where a deeply integrated, collaborative approach was taken from the start. As the industry continues to embrace mass timber, these insights will be essential in driving the success and sustainability of the built environment. Let’s build the future together. #TeamHarwood

Mass Timber Structures: Opportunities and Challenges While the sustainability and aesthetic appeal of mass timber are undeniable, it’s important to acknowledge the technical challenges it brings. Beyond the well-documented concerns around fire safety, acoustics, and water vulnerability, timber shrinkage poses a significant risk over time. Unlike materials like steel or aluminium, timber can experience substantial shrinkage, which may exceed the thermal expansion of aluminium façade profiles or the live load deflection values of a steel frame. This discrepancy introduces complex design and coordination challenges for façade engineers and other disciplines. As exciting as mass timber structures are, they also bring a host of risks that the industry might not yet be fully prepared to address. Are we ready to tackle these challenges at scale? I’d love to hear your thoughts—how can we innovate to mitigate these risks while leveraging the benefits of timber? #MassTimber #FacadeEngineering #ConstructionChallenges #SustainableDesign

A significant fire not only endangers lives and leaves enormous property damage in its wake, but it also has long-term financial repercussions for communities and businesses. Fire testing is essential in predicting how different building products and systems will perform in a fire event. Gyprock™ and Rondo provide valuable solutions for designers looking to specify wall and ceiling assemblies that meet fire safety requirements. Our wide range of high-performance fire-rated plasterboards, such as Fyrchek and EC08 Extreme, are tailored for both commercial and residential applications. Our latest whitepaper, in collaboration with Rondo Australia - Steel Wall and Ceiling Systems - "Fire Testing of Walls & Ceilings: A Deep Dive" - delves into the fire testing for walls and ceilings, examining the standards, methodologies, and materials used to ensure safety and compliance. At Dewson Architects, we always recommend performing a blower door test. But what exactly is it, and why is it important? In simple terms, a blower door test helps us identify areas in your home where air is leaking—whether through windows, doors, or other small gaps. If your home has too many points where air can escape, it could overheat during the summer or waste significant energy trying to stay warm in the winter. In humid climates, these leaks can also contribute to excess humidity inside. We aim to avoid excessive air leaks because they lead to higher energy consumption and increased maintenance costs for your home. In the video, you'll notice how a smoke pen reveals these air escape areas, which can be resolved during construction. Even with some minor leaks, we're pleased that our recent test showed a result of 0.72 air changes per hour (ACH), which is close to the Passive House standard of 0.6 ACH. This is a terrific outcome, thanks to the dedication of our tradespeople, building science consultants, and architectural team.
