🌲🌳 In early 2024, The Scottish Government launched a public consultation to gather views on the revised Circular Economy and Waste Route Map to 2030. The Route Map sets out a series of proposed actions under four strategic themes: 1. Reduce and reuse 2. Modernise recycling 3. Decarbonise disposal 4. Strengthen the circular economy The Lines Between was commissioned to analyse the responses to the consultation and report on the findings. The report, produced by Alastair Graham and Abi Sharp was published earlier this month and can be read in full here: https://lnkd.in/ek-ezCAs #climatechange #socialresearch #circulareconomy

Understanding Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a crucial environmental policy approach aimed at ensuring that producers take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products. This means that manufacturers are not only accountable for the design and production of their goods but also for their disposal and recycling. By incorporating EPR, companies are encouraged to create products that are easier to recycle, reuse, or repurpose, reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact. EPR shifts the burden of waste management from municipalities to producers, fostering sustainable practices and innovative product designs. It incentivizes companies to improve the recyclability of their products, develop take-back schemes, and contribute to the cost of waste management systems. Implementing EPR can lead to significant benefits, including reduced landfill use, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enhanced resource recovery. It aligns with the broader goals of a circular economy, where products are kept in use for as long as possible, and waste is minimized. To see how EPR is integrated into our self-sustainable city project, and how it contributes to our vision of a greener future, read our latest blog article. #ExtendedProducerResponsibility #EPR #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #GreenLiving #WasteManagement #EcoFriendly #Recycling #SelfSustainableCity https://lnkd.in/gAJhQnmU

Every day, we’re faced with headlines about rising waste and missed recycling targets. But what if we focused on solutions instead of problems? The public sector—government departments, councils, and schools—has the power to lead by example. By rethinking how we manage surplus assets, we can reduce waste, cut costs, and move closer to achieving Ireland’s sustainability goals. Here’s an interesting read on the challenges and opportunities Ireland faces in waste management: https://lnkd.in/epyKYU7r Let’s work together to make a positive impact. #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #PublicSector #Innovation #ClimateAction

Yesterday, KPKT launched the circular economy blueprint, which includes legislation changes to enable implementation of EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility), a zero waste to landfill certification and an Act on circular economy. The Minister singled out waste-to-energy plants as one of the solutions as well. We covered this in a previous article (https://lnkd.in/gGFMSuDM) that highlighted how waste-to-energy is often considered somewhat of a "last resort" in the circular economy. Will this be reflected in the strategies? We've also tried and failed to implement waste separation at source and even, recyclables pick up at the curb (so many complaints about how all the trash is eventually mixed in the truck). Can this blueprint make a difference?

Resource and #wastemanagement has rapidly evolved over the past thirty years, shifting from landfill as the primary solution to a leading force in achieving net-zero goals. #Reuse plays a crucial role in this journey toward net-zero and a #circulareconomy, yet it is often overshadowed by #recycling. Despite ranking higher in the waste hierarchy, reuse is frequently overlooked, trailing only prevention as the optimal approach to managing resources and waste.
