🎉 IMDEA Networks is proud to announce that our researchers Juan Marcos Ramírez, Vincenzo Mancuso, and Marco Ajmone Marsan have received the Best Paper Award for their work 👇 🔹The Rumble in the Millimeter Wave Jungle: Obstructions Vs RIS 🗺️ Presented at the Mediterranean Communication and Computer Networking Conference (MedComNet), June 2024, in Nice, France. 📉 This paper concentrates on the effects of Poisson-located obstructions on millimeter wave links and derives a path loss model for RIS-assisted communications. Considering operating frequency, object density, size, minimum SNR, and operating frequency, it assesses the likelihood of an outage in indoor environments with antenna beam-steering and random obstructions. Our paper "Detecting and Analysing Open Geodata Reconnaissance Targeting Critical Infrastructure" now published by IEEE in the #ICMCIS 2024 Proceedings! The Next ICMCIS conference will be held in Oeiras, Portugal on 13-14 May 2025. hope to see you there! Abstract: The war in Ukraine since 2014 has raised questions about sustainability of the traditionally strong Open Data policies in Europe. Information describing the critical infrastructure objects are usually not provided as Open Data through Geospatial APIs, but many datasets providing highly useful information for reconnaissance on the surroundings of these objects are. This paper describes a method for automatically detecting and analysing likely reconnaissance of the surroundings of known critical infrastructure objects based on analytics of Web API access log data. This paper was originally presented at the NATO Science and Technology Organization Symposium (ICMCIS) organized by the Information Systems Technology (IST) Panel, IST-205-RSY – the ICMCIS, held in Koblenz, Germany, 23-24 April 2024. MIA Teknoloji Participates in Secure Societies 2024: Horizon Europe Cluster 3 Brokerage Event in Istanbul! Hosted by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye, alongside Sabancı University and the Istanbul Chamber of Industry, the event was a pivotal opportunity for us to connect with key stakeholders from the EU and Associated Countries. This gathering in Istanbul served as an ideal platform for fostering collaborations in civil security research. It enabled us to gain valuable insights into the Horizon Europe Cluster 3 Calls and further strengthen our consortia for upcoming projects under the HORIZON-CL3-2024-BM-01-02: Interoperability for border and maritime surveillance and situational awareness, as well as the HORIZON-CL3-2024-DRS-01-02: Open Topic calls. We are excited about the future possibilities that these collaborations will bring and look forward to contributing to enhanced security measures on a global scale.

So here is an interesting history question about the Wi-Fi MAC. Why did the WLAN standards choose to use Carrier Sense Multiple Access instead of the more deterministic and more efficient Time Division Multiple Access mechanism used by cellular technology? Among other reasons, it seems to be more of a necessity than a choice, Wi-Fi MAC had to be designed to be used on unlicensed spectrum which means Wi-Fi devices are expected to co-exist with other technologies that use the unlicensed spectrum and hence it was decided that the station devices (and not the Access Point) are in the best position to detect other communications and listen before they talk. Since cellular uses dedicated licensed spectrum, the medium access function can be centralized to the access point/base station. There are after all some tradeoffs we need to make if we want to use free spectrum 😊 This and many other really cool history bites about the early implementations of WLANs back from the WaveLAN days in the 1990s and the major commercial enablers along the way were presented in a fascinating presentation by Bruce Tuch that I really enjoyed at the Wi-Fi World Congress event today in Geneva.
