Let me tell you how life works. I spent 13 years building a career in #lending. I started as a Credit Analyst for a major credit card company. That lead me to Merchant Services for another major bank where I conducted virtual POS trainings for this brand new thing called e-commerce. Then I made a slight pivot into consumer lending. Why? Because, way back in my Credit Analyst days, I decided I wanted to be a Credit Underwriter. I plotted my path and I worked hard. Just before I applied for the Loan Specialist position in Home Equity (a promotion), I checked in with my team leader on whether this was the path to Underwriting. So, imagine my shock when, the day after I accepted the offer, an internal announcement was made that the path to Underwriting had changed and would now be routed through a brand new role that had just been created! I was devastated, but determined not to stop. That is, until the pandemic hit. As everyone shifted to #remote work, I found myself working with a new bank and a brand new team leader. Who literally laughed at me when I told her I wanted to be an Underwriter because, “everyone wants to be an underwriter”. That was IT! I decided to move on and discovered a new love. #StartUps! I walked in fully aware that start ups are volatile and high risk/high reward. But they led me to my second love. #CustomerSuccess. A position that allowed me to use all of my gained knowledge and skill and do what I have always truly loved. Helping people. My start up journey hasn’t been smooth. I’ve lasted through messy cultures, #layoffs, and murky #leadership. But I’ve met some really good people along the way and gained invaluable skills. I’ve also seen some pretty cool products and services that I can’t wait to watch take off! If you made it this far in my very #random TEDtalk, I have 2 takeaways for you: 1. Leadership should support, lead, believe in, and develop true talent. Not doing so means, not only will your company lose really good and dedicated workers, you’ll lose those different perspectives that truly drive innovation. 2. Never be afraid to #pivot. When I’m hiring BDMs to help me grow my private lending business, I look for 3 key qualities. I don’t look for technical skill. I don’t look at how they interpret numbers. I don’t even care if they’ve had any experience in sales whatsoever. I look for: 1. Honesty, 2. A willingness to learn, and 3. An ability to connect with people, I can’t teach those 3 things. If a BDM doesn’t have this, then there’s not much more I can do.
