🚨 Public Service Announcement - Driving in Winter 🌨️ ❄️ ☃️ I remember the first winter in Ireland, asking the tyre shop for all-season tyres. Even if frosts are seldom, I would trade the better grip and safety for the shorter life in a heartbeat. You can get them, but only as rally tyres (aka better grip on mixed-quality roads) but it is very hard to find them. 🥶 In cold temperatures the rubber behaves differently, in rare cases, you might even be sold tyres designed for a hot climate. Always buy tyres from reputable shops, and even ask your fitter for advice on what tyre suits your needs. It's more fun than you might think. 🎿 Slow down using gears if not sure about the road conditions, pulse your brakes, avoid locking your brakes and lose control. Concrete-ish road surfaces are guaranteed to lose grip, especially if the car does not have ABS. 🐄 ⛸️ Low profile/wide tyres are bad when it comes to winter driving, "the look" is debatable, but bigger wall sizes and hence, lower pressure do make a difference. 💅 Control in the snow is better with a four-wheel drive, rear wheel drive when paired with a stability control is better than front-wheel drive, especially with experience. 🏥 If you lose control of your vehicle and a ditch is imminent, hands off the steering wheel or at least thumbs out. You don't want to add broken fingers to the list. ✅ Always correct tyre tread and, hopefully, extra, safety and frugality don't mix. Check your tyre size and call a few shops for options, unless in-stock orders are on a case-by-case basis, and you might be in luck to either have a lower price or a better tyre for the same money. 📞 If you happened to be one of many sitting at home and working remotely this week, many tyre shops offer mobile service. If there is one thing I would put on the credit card after Christmas, it's new tyres. Why do I feel I can pitch in, I happened to crash into the ditch during the winter back in Lithuania (like almost everyone) in the countryside and, eventually, you start to pick up as you go. Safe driving (if you have to) P.S. Dedicated scrapers over hot water (damages rubber, plastics and glass over time).
We got there! Out tomorrow: From lethal roads to widespread disruption, we cover the full impact of the heavy snow that fell in Limerick - a nightmare for many of you! We also showcase the brighter side, featuring stunning photos shared by you, our readers

Durham has been on the move for the past 20+ years, since I did my first convention center expansion study there. Now, the city is truly exploding, especially downtown. We completed our portion of the Destination Durham Placemaking Plan last year, then dug into a specific convention center expansion study. What is likely obvious to most who know the small facility (which performs exceedingly well, making an operating profit, thanks to OVG's expert management) cannot be appropriately expanded onsite. What is needed is a new, larger site that can accommodate a much larger and more efficiently designed facility that is still walkable to all the great amenities downtown, with an attached headquarters hotel. While Durham does not like to be compared to any city, as they are their own unique authentic place, Nashville is a comparison situation regarding the new site opportunity for a convention center. Nashville's outdated center was in the middle of downtown and had no good options for expansion, just like Durham. So the new Music City Center was developed on the south side of downtown. The results for them have been dramatic, as the second most popular convention destination according to Cvent. Site is not the only consideration or reason for success or failure, as is clear in Nashville. Many other great factors played a role in their ascent to the top of the heap. But having that excellent facility in the right place, with the right facilities and amenities and HQ hotel, allowed that leg of the visitor economy stool to thrive. I truly believe that Durham can thrive in the group event business, which will benefit local residents and businesses for generations. https://lnkd.in/gAzEWMJP

DON'T GET THE PALAZZO WRONG To avoid missed/delayed CES meetings, a pro tip for my #pr and #journalist colleagues. Pre-empting my upcoming post about how journalists can best navigate and conquer CES, here's a timely tip based on a few interactions I've had this week: If you're either inviting folks or being invited to a suite in the greater Venetian area, double-check whether it's actually in the Palazzo or the Venetian. They're "right next to each other," but a strong 15-minute walk apart. And not what you want to discover in the moment, if you've efficiently stacked your meetings like I have. Here's a list of folks known to be in the Palazzo suites: https://lnkd.in/g34KqkQx The confusing part is that it mentions "Venetian" in the name. But it's not the same as the tower that's accessible from right near the Venetian parking garage. The "real" Venetian suites have room numbers like 29-XXX, 34-XXX or 35-XXX. Even if you're waiting to get the exact room number when your client checks in, *please* confirm with us journalist types ahead of time in which property the tower suite really is. Because only in the case of Leslie Nielsen's character in "Naked Gun" is it funny to get the Palazzo wrong. Otherwise, it's just an unconventional naming convention that's inconvenient for conventions. Cc: Adam W., Mia Green, Maddie Greer, Ari Morguelan, M.A., Shaelyn LeLievre, Cherie Crosby
