The number of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) at our Zoo just grew by one. We're thrilled to announce that chimpanzee, Rozi, gave birth on June 10th. Rozi (pronounced like Rosie) and her infant did well initially, but after a few weeks we noticed a decline in the infant's health and became concerned that she was not receiving enough of her mother’s milk. Our veterinarians stabilized her and keepers have been providing around the clock care behind the scenes until the baby is strong enough to rejoin Rozi and the troop. As for the baby’s name, that's up to you to decide. Look for details about the baby’s progress and the timing of a naming contest at www.MarylandZoo.org and across our social channels. Rozi was approved for breeding by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Program. She is genetically compatible with all three of the Zoo’s breeding males. The identity of the father is awaiting testing. Her infant will join our three other juvenile chimps: Lola, who was born in July 2019 (to Zoo parents Bunny and Jack); Violet was born in December of 2019 (to Zoo parents Raven and Louie); and, Maisie was born in August 2020 (mother is at the Oklahoma Zoo) and came to Maryland Zoo in September of that year.

The value of Life comes into question when its manipulated to gain an elusive certainty, we'll likely never manifest. Breeding is an industry that must come to an END, regardless of the intent. The inherent risks embedded in the breeding facilities, absence of regulation coupled with the mere lack of comprehending the complexity of handling animals, far outweigh perceived benefits of resulting data. Alternatives of human cell based models offer patient centric value!
Testing Industry Plans MASSIVE Monkey Farms in the US! Even as Congress pushes for a shift to modern, human-based testing, the animal testing industry wants to build massive monkey farms. This is despite: ❌ High failure rates of animal testing in translating to humans. ❌ Availability of safer, more effective human-biology-based testing methods. ❌ Public outrage against animal cruelty in research facilities. This week we completed an Atlantic salmon sea lice challenge…….merging our expertise in animal health, sea lice controlled challenges and breeding & genetics. #HuntsmanMarine closed the sea lice life cycle nearly two decades ago allowing us to produce thousands of individual copepodids (the infectious life stage of the sea louse) per year to conduct controlled sea lice challenges with Atlantic salmon. We have since challenged each year class of Atlantic salmon within a commercial broodstock program since 2010 to assess resistance amongst families, estimate heritability and provide breeding values to inform selection for stock improvement. This particular controlled challenge was designed to include expected sea lice resistant and susceptible families. Such benchmark challenges allow us to track progress as we continue to select for further improvement over time. We will also use the individual fish results to identify genomic SNP markers from collected tissue samples that will greatly increase selection efficiency in the future. https://lnkd.in/gXeVgA7X Photo: Sue (foreground) and Phil (background) are counting sea lice on individual Atlantic salmon as Brooklyn (middle) is checking the anesthetic bath for any sea lice that might have fallen off while the fish was in there.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research in the UK! In May 2014, the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research was launched with 72 signatories from all sectors of the life sciences community in the UK. Today, that number has reached 127. In the past decade, the UK's Concordat has sparked animal research transparency agreements around the world, with a current total of 10 countries that have created transparency agreements since 2014. There are nearly 600 organisations worldwide that have committed to openness. Today, we have organisations across the globe who provide virtual lab tours and talk openly to the public about the animal research they carry out - this kind of information did not exist 10 years ago. Concordat signatories agree to four commitments: 1: We will be clear about when, how and why we use animals in research 2: We will enhance our communications with the media and the public about our research using animals 3: We will be proactive in providing opportunities for the public to find out about research using animals 4: We will report on progress annually and share our experiences You can find examples of how signatories have gone above and beyond these commitments on the Leaders in Openness page on our Concordat website (linked below) along with Annual Reports, which offer full case studies and information about what signatories are doing. Learn more in our new article, 'A decade of openness on animal research:' https://lnkd.in/e_2_cUhU Let's celebrate a decade of the Concordat and continue to pave the way in animal research transparency 🌎👏 #Openness24 #ConcordatOpenness #MedicalResearch #MedicalAdvancement #VeterinaryResearch #AnimalsinResearch
