Founder & CEO at The Ability Challenge | Supporting educators in delivering research-based special education | Partnering with schools, districts, & networks to develop authentically inclusive school communities
This article from Edutopia - George Lucas Educational Foundation is so perfectly timed to share on this day of gratitude. For all the teachers out there, when your done resting and taking the well-deserved break this weekend gives space for, check out this article and see how your teaching aligns. Try using one strategy that’s a stretch between now and winter break. So many gems in here! One thing I’d add is to ensure multiple access points are designed into your lesson. There are kids who may not understand, some who struggle to pay attention, others who process more slowly, and so on. Thinking about how you continuously check for understanding and redirect kids back to your lesson is critical. Perhaps it’s using proximity to remind a child where you are on a reading passage, making sure the lesson objective is clearly posted, or handing out written directions as you verbally walk through an assignment, ensuring that all kids are welcomed and encouraged to participate in learning goes a long way. What are your go-to strategies for ensuring access for all learners? The Ability Challenge #specialeducation #inclusion #differentiation #equityinschools

Today’s classrooms are filled with diverse learners with social, cultural, economic, language, and learning differences. Some students have EAL/D backgrounds. Students with special needs are instructed in classrooms alongside gifted learners. Many students have been working with technology since they were toddlers; others have never used a mouse. Each student’s brain has been uniquely wired. An individual’s life experiences create an intricate web of memories and shape the way new learning is received. Teachers need to welcome this diversity and seek out ways to address each student’s unique needs. A traditional one-size-fits-all approach will work for a few but will likely leave many unsuccessful learners. In the past, many teachers conducted schooling in a cycle of “teach, test, and hope for the best.” Many believed that if students didn’t get it, it was not the teacher’s fault; rather, it was due to the students’ lack of effort and/or abilities. Differentiation is basically providing the opportunity for every student to succeed and reach their potential. #SFCcommunity #Reflective #Connected #Empowered #BCEschools #BrisbaneCatholicEducation #myamazingschool #teach #challenge #Teachers #education #school #inclusivepractices #differentiation #classroom #classroominnovation #classroomideas #teachersoflinkedin #teachingandlearning #teachersfollowteachers #teachertraining Susie Ursula Tracey Katie Leanne Tracey Bradley Kirsten
