Ohhh! Then this happened. Following the lead of Beverley A Agbakoba-Onyejianya, partner at Olisa Agbakoba Legal. I was privileged to have been a panelist at the just concluded Zuma Film Festival hosted by the Nigerian Film Corporation. Also on the panel with me were Moses Olayiwola, Elizabeth E. Tijani, ACIArb, Associate at Aluko & Oyebode Fatima Abdullahi of UUBO Update, and of course, my favorite creative industry lawyer and podcaster Saadatu Anisah Ujudud Shariff as the moderator and facilitator of the panel. My sub-session was contract management where I emphasised it's obvious significance in ensuring any successful film production. Other Pointers: - Apparently, the lawyer of the Executive Producer/filmmaker is not your lawyer, #getyours to review your contract before you sign. - Always insist on a NON-disclosure and confidentiality agreement (NDA) before disclosing your ideas (not just any kind of idea though lol) - ⁠Don’t sign any film production contract without a precise clause to secure your on-screen credit. Otherwise, you will explain how exactly you contributed to a film without evidence. - Film production is not just a production but a business of the production of a film. 🎬 Demystifying the Role of a Production Lawyer in the Film Industry: "Am I a producer?" That's a question I often get asked. The short answer is "no." As much as I am immersed in the world of film production, my role isn't that of a producer. Nor will I ever ask for or [intentionally] take credit as a producer for any film I've worked on as a lawyer (investment roles are, of course, a different scenario). What then, do I do? I am a producer advocate. My role is to understand your job as a producer so intricately that I can anticipate your questions as they arise. Together, we navigate the complex maze of film production, tackling each challenge as a unified team. Every project is a new journey, a fresh learning curve for on-set issues. This could range from intricate choreography and action scenes, to handling sensitive topics like violence, nudity or simulated sex, and even managing real-life risks (like that time I worked on an unscripted series filmed in the perilous Darien Gap). Indian film producers get entangled in legal conflicts over the distribution of profits, intellectual property rights, and breaches of revenue-sharing agreements. These issues frequently arise on account of inadequately drafted co-production agreements or informal commercial understandings that have not been documented in writing, resulting in ambiguity and the potential for disagreements.
