Though not widely appreciated, the Traveling Salesman problem was solved by this guy in 1961. The history of this particular photograph over the years is actually quite vague. Only the text of the signature is known for certain: “May 11, 1961. Salesman Mike Drexler fills up his motorized roller skates at a gas station near Hartford, Connecticut. He has a one-horsepower air-cooled engine behind his back, and in his hand is a remote control with clutch, accelerator and engine switch controls.” It looks cool? It turns out that in 1956, the production of such “transport” was established by the Motorized Roller Skate Company at Detroit (proof in first comment). I don’t know what they hoped for, but as a startup it turned out great. At the time the commercials were released for retail sale, their price was $250, which is almost $2,800 in today's dollars. You can buy a used car!
