Happy Autism Acceptance Day! Our new article discusses how autism is diagnosed and asks: is it worth seeking a diagnosis? "For me, I mainly sought a diagnosis to learn more about myself. I had a lot of unanswered questions when reflecting on my life, and I wondered if autism was the key to answering them. Now that I have a diagnosis, I feel that my life actually makes sense." - Olivia Guy-Evans (Editor and writer for Simply Psychology). https://lnkd.in/e2ASeG_q #autism #autismawarenessmonth #autismacceptanceday #autismdiagnosis

A history of childhood schizophrenia and lessons for autism https://lnkd.in/ehqc-dVs Lots to digest in this article. Important because we are seemingly moving back to some of the sentiments of Mildred Creak and colleagues, where the autism and schizphrenia spectrums can seemingly overlap. Given also that an estimated 1 in 10 people with autism will 'progress' to schizophrenia - https://lnkd.in/e9Vm649j - there's a need for lots more study as to why, alongside screening and managing potentially important symptoms.

Neurodivergent Folks are incredibly Valuable, thank you for writing this and shining a light where it’s needed. Being neurodivergent myself, and raising neurodivergent, children has been an uphill battle of advocation and developing a very thick skin, but it takes its toll when you have a really good heart and good intentions that are misinterpreted in such negative ways by Neurotypical folks… it’s just heartbreaking when you’re doing your best to lift up the world, and they misinterpret it as self-serving. NeuroD kids, at a very young age, learn to stop telling people things they notice that Neurotypical people just don’t understand because of scoffing or disagreement of Neurotypical Authority figures (teachers-coaches-parents), so just as this article says, high functioning autistic kids learn to try to squeeze our square peg being, in their round hole life, and stop speaking up, for fear of the negative misinterpretation attention or discipline to follow. I am writing a book called hummingbird humans what it’s like to experience and see the world that Neurotypical people just don’t see. Although i’m not a writer and I don’t have any experience, I believe I owe it to my children to stand up and say “being neurodivergent is a superpower not a disability and WE don’t need to be fixed or drugged to fit in.” We need society to create a space for Neurodivergent folks to exist and be accepted. Schools where tangible learners w ADHD can be wiggly wonderful hands on learners not stuck in a seat being forced or chastised to “learn it this way - do the math this way-and the admonishment, and sometimes astonishment that my math Answer was Right! The right answer in a way they never thought of, that opened the door to a whole bunch of more calculations that detived an entire process space that was unknown… thank goodness I did not do it Neurotypical way! No team is complete without a neurodivergent person on it because when the brain thinks from the bottom up and builds from pieces, it sees the complex problem in a different way and it makes me a heckuva good R&D, failure analysis quality engineer, and auditor. Thank you again for allowing me to share a little bit and for lifting me up this morning.
As much as I have read about Autism Spectrum and talked with family, friends and colleagues about their lived experience as Autistic people, I still found this article illuminating. People with other forms of neurodiversity may identify with some of these challenges when interacting with people who are neurotypical as well. I experience very similar face blindness and direction finding challenges. #Autistic #disabilityinclusion https://lnkd.in/ewbYPWhD
