Spot rates continue to rise while carriers attempt to cut capacity with blank sailings. Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd pointed out that the alliances cut 5% of sailings between week 20 (May 13-19) and week 24 (June 10-16), equating to 32 canceled sailings out of the 653 scheduled. During this period, 53% of the blank sailings will occur on the Transpacific Eastbound, 25% on the Asia-North Europe and Med, and 22% on the Transatlantic Westbound trade, according to Drewry. The increased blank sailings along with the carriers recent success with GRIs has analysts at Xeneta predicting that spot rates will soon jump again.
