. UScellular counts 4.1 million postpaid customers and around 400,000 prepaid customers across 21 states. Those customers will be able to stay on their current plans, or they can move to an unlimited T-Mobile plan of their choosing with no switching costs. "If UScellular customers choose to switch to T-Mobile, they could save hundreds of millions of dollars combined annually," according to T-Mobile. The financial analysts at New Street Research, in a note to investors earlier this month, estimated the total value of UScellular's customer base at $6.6 billion, based in part on UScellular's average revenues per customer of $54 per month. Thus, T-Mobile's $4.4 billion deal appears to have scored access to those customers at prices lower than some expectations – which could explain the decline in UScellular's shares following T-Mobile's announcement Tuesday. "We see this as positive for T-Mobile," wrote the financial analysts at KeyBanc Capital Markets in a note to investors Tuesday. "The only problem: subscribers often don't like being bought and sold. There is nothing preventing them from being a T-Mobile or Verizon customer today," wrote the New Street analysts. T-Mobile's move on UScellular comes just days after T-Mobile instituted a price hike on some of its legacy plans, worth up to $5 per month. The financial analysts at Wolfe Research estimate T-Mobile's price hikes will affect around 10-15 million of its subscribers. As for UScellular's employees, the company counts 4,300 workers across its corporate and retail operations. UScellular officials said T-Mobile would make employment offers to "a significant number" of those employees after the companies' transaction closes, though they didn't provide details. T-Mobile counts around 67,000 employees. UScellular officials also did not immediately respond to questions about how many retail stores USCellular operates, nor what might happen to those stores following T-Mobile's purchase of UScellular. Finally, it's worth noting that, according to The Wall Street Journal, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert is the 16th highest-paid CEO in the US. MVNO Tesco Mobile Ireland promises two-year price freeze for its customers Mobile virtual network operator (#MVNO) Tesco Mobile in Ireland has committed to freeze prices for the next two years for its customers as other operators raise their costs. In the last two weeks, it emerged that the State’s largest telecoms provider Eir, mobile phone giant Vodafone and rival Three Ireland are all increasing their prices in the coming weeks. The three firms increase their prices every April by 3% plus the rate of inflation at the end of the previous year. This inflation-linked pricing model means Eir’s prices will go up by 7.6% this April, with similar increases for Three Ireland and Vodafone. “Unlike other mobile operators, Tesco Mobile will not increase prices mid-contract, providing peace of mind and financial predictability for customers who sign up for its 24-month bill pay plans,” it said. The price freeze will apply to both new and its existing 500,000 customers. General manager of Tesco Mobile Ireland Ciaran Melia told the Independent: “We’re the only mobile operator in Ireland to offer frozen contracts for our new and existing customers. This means that as a Tesco Mobile customer you will pay for exactly what you signed up for, not a cent more. 📱 Ofcom to ban inflation-linked mid-contract price rises on phones, pay-TV and broadband Phone, broadband and pay-TV companies are to be banned from imposing mid-contract price increases linked to inflation, in a crackdown by the regulator Ofcom. Under plans being introduced in January 2025, Ofcom will force providers to tell customers upfront, in “pounds and pence”, about any expected rises throughout the duration of their deals in a victory for campaigners during the cost of living crisis. The UK’s biggest telecoms providers had inserted terms into contracts imposing annual price increases linked to the consumer prices index (CPI) plus 3.9 percentage points. Most consumers were unaware of the practice, the regulator said. Some operators have been using the retail prices index (RPI), which is typically higher than CPI, plus the same inflation-busting 3.9 percentage point supplement. In December, Ofcom proposed to ban the practice after it carried out a consultation, with the move confirmed on Friday. From 17 January next year, providers must make clear any information about in-contract price rises to customers before they are bound by a contract, to enable them to make an informed choice. Prepaid mobile users in Mexico are moving from traditional operators to MVNOs Telcel , AT&T and Telefónica have seen their prepaid operations challenged by the rates and services from the Mobile Virtual Mobile Operators (#MVNO), who offer large amounts of data for a lower price. The mobile connectivity services offered by the MVNOs are up to 30% cheaper compared to those offered by the traditional operators. In the first quarter of 2024, Telcel reported a year-on-year loss of -643,000 prepaid customers, AT&T recorded -596,000, while Walmart's MVNO #Bait Mobile, added 7.1 million customers in the first few months of this year to a total of 13.3 million subscribers. Daniel Hajj, CEO of América Móvil, has acknowledged the battle that Bait and the other MVNOs represent with the launch of offers and services that have allowed them to reach users that even Telcel had not 'awakened'. “Their [Bait] promotions are very aggressive. I don’t know how profitable their rates are going to be, but we certainly see a very competitive market,” the executive said in a conference call with analysts on the occasion of his financial results for the first quarter of 2024. But the decline in prepaid lines from Telcel and AT&T could also be explained by a strategy to purify their user base. As usual, the recent ruckus about card surcharges has forgotten a bit of context. First, Australia's retail turnover is about $436 billion per year. Annual credit and debit card surcharges are about $1 billion combined, or about a fifth of one percent. In short, so small as to be immaterial. Second, consumers revealed preferences make it clear that hardly anyone cares about card surcharges. Surcharges are a clear pricing signal that is transparent, well telegraphed, and fairly easily avoided. Despite this, consumer keep paying surcharges and clearly value the convenience of card transactions more than the cost. This little trial balloon is a complete waste of time and government attention could surely be better directed almost anywhere else.
