‘We have to organise together’: How could a community focused approach lead to more energy efficient generation? Find out more in this week’s ‘Sandbox’ FOMO5... The key takeaway from our latest ‘Sandbox’ episode - ‘Powering On – Energy: Past, Present, and Future’ - is that there are many potential outcomes for the future of energy in the UK. One of these is determining how energy is used, and by what interventions, by the local community. Buro Happold has worked on various community projects, such as the CommuniHeat project in Barcombe, Sussex, and smart local energy systems in North Wales, which embody this idea. The CommuniHeat project focused on creating a fully electric village, which was off the gas grid, to reduce their reliance on oil for energy needs. The Buro Happold team created a digital twin and looked at how to do this – from implementing heat pumps and solar panels, to wind energy. Ben Jones, Associate Director, Buro Happold, said: “There's actually real benefit and economy of scale to a whole community taking the energy transition into their own hands and owning that asset. “You could actually save them money. You could give them energy security. You could pull that community together.” Maddie McTaggart, Associate Director, Buro Happold, discussing the whole system approach taken in the North Wales case study, said: “We worked on a number of kind of local projects, looking at various aspects such as introducing a new ground source heat pump that could feed to the school during the day and then pick up the peak heat from a leisure centre and possibly extend to social housing.” Discussing this community-led approach, Professor Iwan Rhys Morus said: “It takes huge collective effort to energise the world and to do that successfully in the future. I mean, we have to organise together. We have to think seriously about what different communities' energy needs are, and how that can be achieved in ways that work for them.” This episode features Buro Happold engineering experts Maddie McTaggart and Ben Jones, special guest professor and published author, Iwan Rhys Morus, plus our regular host Andy Duncan. You can also find the full episode, as well as its accompanying FOMO5s, on all the usual platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube.
