We need to implement comprehensive evaluation typically includes intellectual and academic achievement testing, as well as an assessment of the critical underlying language skills that are closely linked to dyslexia. These include receptive (listening) and expressive language skills, phonological skills including phonemic awareness, and also a student’s ability to rapidly name letters and names. A student’s ability to read lists of words in isolation, as well as words in context, should also be assessed. If a profile emerges that is characteristic of readers with dyslexia, an individualized intervention plan should be developed, which should include appropriate accommodations, such as extended time. The testing can be conducted by trained school or outside specialists. #dyslexia #inclusion #assessment #IEP

📣Let's talk about the role of oral language in reading (and dyslexia)! 📖Research on dyslexia: "The Foundations of Literacy Development in Children at Familial Risk of Dyslexia" by Charles Hulme, Hannah M. Nash, Debbie Gooch, Arne Lervåg, and Margaret J. Snowling. In 2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣5️⃣ a longitudinal study of children at familial risk of dyslexia, children with preschool language difficulties, and a comparison group of children without these risks was published in the journal Psychological Science. 🗣️The findings underline the importance of oral language skills for the development of both word-level literacy and reading comprehension. Speech and Language Therapist working with SENCOs who are fed up with responding reactively to their SLCN, and want a system they can stick to
I am often making the case in schools for maintaining a focus on spoken language. In the Early Years this is often accepted as common sense, but it can become a harder sell as more of the curriculum becomes more overtly focussed on reading and writing. The fact is though, that persistent reading difficulties are often grounded in one or more areas of language need. Look at the underlying needs and strengths of many people with dyslexia, and I’ll show you the same list for those with language difficulties…. - difficulties with short-term auditory memory that can present as difficulties analysing and manipulating the sounds in words - executive functioning difficulties such as differences with attention, initiation, planning - difficulties with reading comprehension - difficulties with retention and retrieval of learned information - strong visual skills There is significant co-occurrence between reading difficulties and language needs, and we might be missing the most impactful ways of supporting young people if we don’t think about language and language-based interventions. ALT TEXT: A graphic of two children sat on a stack of books, each reading a book, with the text 'Are you looking in the wrong place for your children with persistent reading issues? Think language….Think DLD……' #speechandlanguage #speechandlanguagetherapy #speechandlanguagetherapist #speechtherapist #speechandlanguagecpd #SLCN #SLCNsystems #TeamSLCN #SLCNtribe #SEN #SEND #SENDInstagram #earlyyearseducator #primaryteaching #primaryteacher #primary #primaryheadteachers #primaryschool #ect #earlycareerteacher #earlycareerteachers #learningdisabilities #autismacceptance #downsyndrome #dldseeme #developmentallanguagedisorder

Julian Elliott: What I mean by that is let's return to the original meaning of this term which is a severe and persistent problem with reading and we can use that to discuss or describe children. So, the whole dyslexia debate is only about changing squiggles to language and that does not require high IQ. My response: True, changing squiggles to language does not require a high IQ. All the same, many children with high IQ are also not able to read in English. My last student before I stopped teaching had an IQ of 130. Here is his Psychological Assessment Report.
