It is where money can be made or lost, and where the grower finally, conclusively, finds out what has been happening under their feet. And, once the stress of harvest is over, potatoes need to be cured and cooled, especially if they are to be stored for any length of time. In his report "Where Do Walnuts Go From Here?" our analyst Matt Woolf presents a near-term outlook for the California walnut industry. "With such a large crop in 2023, a natural concern is the lower pressure on price. Yet the higher quality of this year’s crop means it is likely growers can expect a higher price than last year," Matt states. All things considered, he expects the price will be in the range of 35 cents to 45 cents per inshell pound for the 2023 crop, a modest increase from the 32 cents for last year’s crop. Still, Matt cautions, "If this forecast price range is correct, walnut profitability will improve, but with most growers still struggling to break even." 🥔 Potato update 🥔 Uncertainties have emerged regarding the harvest of the EU’s potato crop in 2023. This follows earlier in the year’s weather problems, which included rainy weather during planting and hot, dry weather in May and June. These conditions may have had an impact on crop development. However, the growing month of July and August turned the tide, as the most recent figures show that the growth lag has largely been made up. The Fontane variety, which is dominant in terms of area in Europe, in particular shows enormous growth resilience. However, for a number of other varieties, such as Innovator in particular, it will still be a challenge to achieve the long-term average, so that a significant price increase later in the storage season should certainly be possible.
