This article in The Tyee discusses a woman calling for emergency support regarding gender-based violence. The 911 dispatcher, who had a history of gender-based violence himself, did not treat the call with the criticality it required. The woman was murdered. As a society, we are too permissive about violence. Can policies and validations be put in place to ensure public safety positions are filled safely? Can we build safety, accountability and transparency into our systems? https://lnkd.in/gcm4j2E6

6 women murdered in the last week by men who chose to control and abuse them. Leaving is the most dangerous time for women. Men who choose violence see their partners and children as their possessions. They believe they’re entitled to do what they like with their possessions. Our perpetrator even said this to me, that he could do what he liked to us and I could not stop him. I endured 30 years of coercive control and domestic violence and nearly 6 years of continued stalking, harassment, trespass, abuse by proxy, smear campaigns, counter parenting, theft, revenge debt, financial abuse and 3 years of legal abuse and perjury. Only now are we finally seeing accountability. No one should ever have to endure the torture one man can inflict. Seek help. Create a safety plan. Seek accountability. Seek support. I wonder how many of these women would be alive had they been believed or had bystanders stepped up to hold the perpetrators accountable before it was too late. Believing victims saves lives. False allegations are so rare they’re negligible. Perpetrators peddle a narrative that she’s lying, she’s crazy, or both, to cover up their crimes. Perpetrators do not admit to being abusers. They are charming, charismatic and extremely deceptive. Just like you cannot tell a pedophile from his outward appearance and character you cannot tell a perpetrator of domestic, family and sexual violence from how they seem to you. Victim blaming and shaming is rampant and must stop, it only enables the perpetrator. Victim shaming and blaming is patriarchy in action and pure misogyny. All of us have a role to play. My role is to stop this torture from happening to others. What’s your role? Domestic, family and sexual violence is perpetrated by cowards. This behaviour is garbage. These dangerous men must be taken out of the homes they are poisoning. #HowDareShe be safe in her own home! #HowDareShe end the relationship! #HowDareShe live!

How we talk about incidents of gender-based violence is so important. I saw a concerning sky news headline shared by a campaigning organisation who I really respect that claims that 'Violent attacks against women on Britain's trains up by more than 50% since 2021'. Alarms bells usually ring for me when I see this because first this is probably based on reporting figures which are not the same as prevalence. There's been a massive push to increase reporting. The governments ENOUGH campaign https://lnkd.in/ejHWWcZX Tfl's own poster campaign https://lnkd.in/eEEJchST Sexual harassment on public transport has been a huge problem for... well since there's been public transport. There isn't suddenly a 50% rise in incidents. This is scare mongering. The fact that reporting of incidents has risen is great to see as it means there's greater understanding of these behaviours being unacceptable, increased trust that something may happen as a result of a report (although many people are still let down by poor responses) and more being done to prevent harassment from happening in the first place. Another factor that I suspected that lead to this '50%' increase is that the data is being compared to from 2021 to 2023. Now I don't know about you but I wan't going on much public transport in 2021 as there were travel restrictions due to covid. It's not reliable to compare these figures. It's just lazy journalism. This FOI response from the British Transport Police actually suggests that reported sexual assaults have decreased since 2019 where 809 were reported compared to 656 in 2023. https://lnkd.in/eZ_8f3X8 This article by the BBC more accurately reflects what's actually happening. It says there's been a 10% increase in reporting of sexual offences. https://lnkd.in/eWsSxbBK. It is quoting this FOI response which TFL themselves say the data comparison between years where covid travel restrictions were in place and now are unreliable. https://lnkd.in/ewkQvb5P
We can all do something to challenge abuse.

"The complete charter for the DULT working group provides further detail about how it will go about its work. For example, the charter calls for the working group to to work with gender-based violence experts throughout development of the protocol. The combination of the trauma-informed expertise with the technical knowledge will be an important aspect to address these specific threat models. Since most of the existing tracking accessories use Bluetooth, the DULT WG will coordinate, as needed, with the Bluetooth SIG and IETF 6lo WG. While the WG will aim to minimize hardware changes needed in tracking accessories to implement this protocol, it will also aim to not preclude adoption by manufacturers of larger devices whose primary purpose is not location tracking, but have location tracking capabilities (e.g., headphones, bicycles, and smartphones)." This sort of cross referencing, multi network with tech devices and tech companies to help prevent victims of DFV can't come fast enough. The level of complexity involved in trying to extricate from the cyber webs perpetrators set up (often from day one) to ensnare their victims, monitor their movements and also their communications is way beyond the scope of even awareness of most people. These cyber webs keep perpetrators in control, and victim/survivors unable to truly escape even if they've physically been able to leave. Thank you WESNET for all you do for victim/survivors of DFV. Bryan Sean S. @ I'm A Survivor Of Domestic Violence Inc 501(c)(3) in Las Vegas 24/7 - 365 1-702-323-4477 Advocate, Activist, Survivor, Whistle Blower for reform of superior, magistrate judges, judicial officers
This is a truly "without a doubt a travesty, another life lost, and stolen because #kellywilkinsonwasignoredbylawenforcementanditwaspolicenegligence and as a result this young women lost her life, and it was stolen all from domestic violence "due to her cry's for help fell on deaf ears, this is very common it is so sad, but true so "please re-post, let's keep fighting the fight for more resources", please re-post for simple awareness, for victims of domestic violence, who lost their lives due to their cry's for help just weren't answered, like myself as a victim of harrowing domestic violence, that I actually died myself, okay and I was brought back to life from being paddled, in the back of an ambulance, I encountered a TBI (traumatic brain injury permanent) loss of vision in my right eye, that is permanent as well, this is directly from domestic violence, inflicted by an ex partner from 2007 who was stalking until 2019 when I was nearly killed, the ex-partner used third parties. So my story is clear, so the neglect of multiple police reports, phone calls, to multiple law enforcement agencies, being ignored for over a 13 year span, of me calling, reporting, multiple incidents of stalking, pictures being taken, videos of em and my family members, that I lived was ignored, these events are literally Lifetime movie worthy, I've actually already been approached, all of my reports, allegations simply fell on deaf ears, "directly due to the judges denying restraining orders, because they wanted more serious evidence (I asked the judges do I need to be shot or stabbed first) but I was ignored, after presenting videos, letters with death threats, and 40 different exhibits, 14 recent police reports 40 total over 13 years, so this was a combination of multiple acts of judicial misconduct, from the judges on multiple fronts, and complete police negligence 120%" all from one court and 3 Superior court judges 2 judicial officers it was a joint venture to let me get killed!! This is why I started my 501c3 non profit foundation I'm A Survivor Of Domestic Violence Inc. I also launched our own " I'm A Survivor Tip Line as noted 985-326-9111 that is on our website noted as follows https://lnkd.in/e-Cdu-gn I personally will not stop advocating for my foundation this is my life mission, until new legislation, is passed before the senate, for stricter sentencing, stricter laws, for first offenders, repeat offenders, to level the playing ground, for these perpetrators that commit these heinous, horrific crimes, of domestic violence," to address all allegations of domestic violence, or stalking, "it is very apparent and very clear the courts aka superior court judges, magistrate judges, judicial officers must issue TPO (temporary restraining orders) just as a precaution !! This harrowing story highlights the plight that victims/survivors of domestic abuse face every day. We want to make it completely clear: false accusations of domestic abuse are vanishingly rare. When someone comes forward and discloses their experience of domestic abuse, we must believe them. This article is about more than police failings, it highlights the clear need for us all to take reports of domestic abuse seriously. By ignoring those who ask for help, we put them and any children involved at risk of injury and death. Believe survivors. Domestic abuse is always serious. By acting sooner rather than later, we can save lives. #domesticabuse #domesticviolence #VAWG #breakthesilence

We need solutions that take the person who chooses to use violence away - we need true ACCOUNTABILITY and a community that does not condone their use of violence. As long as we let perpetrators continue their lives uninterrupted, victim survivors will bear the burden for their safety. Enough is enough. We need real change. We need REAL accountability not words.
