ruzzia's war in #Ukraine is its attempt to prove the #West incapable of defeating it, the #US unwilling to defend, and, ultimately, #NATO ’s irrelevance. Undermining the Western collective security system through complete discreditation may prove far easier than it seems at first glance. ruzzia is undoubtedly unprepared to face the combined forces of a united Europe, but it can challenge individual nations—even relatively large ones. Its future behavior will be dictated by its ongoing militarization. A country that has dedicated nearly all its national resources to the means of war has no alternative to war. If the only tool you have is a gun, the only business you can start is robbery.

#10 of 2024 was “Counterstrike” by Eric Schmitt and Thom Shanker. This bestseller is a classic “whole of government” look at our efforts after 9/11 to combat Al Qaeda and conduct counterterrorism. As I crest two decades of military service I can’t help but think about how works like this are now becoming history books - modern history that I’ve lived and participated in. It starts and ends with the Abottabad raid (Operation Neptune Spear) but lays out chapters in between on the use of intelligence, networked warfare, the role of the internet, counter messaging, home grown extremism, the challenges of other country’s involvement, and deterrence. I’m always fascinated with Neptune Spear and the national command authority decision to do it, along with the planning, preparation and execution of the historic task. More details have come out since this writing, but the context from the rest of the book was great. Some parts of the middle admittedly were a slog to get through, but comparing and contrasting the Bush and Obama administrations and tying in the perspectives of the many agencies, services, leaders, and personalities involved was fairly revealing. If nothing, read it to understand how we got from 9/11 to even be able to pull off the historic Pakistan raid. Definitely recommended.

The work of Vincent Bugliosi (Reclaiming History) and GERALD L POSNER MD (Case Closed) are applied to the TRAP-18 (Terrorism Radicalization Assessment Protocol) developed by Reid Meloy. His failure to affiliate was a red flag that could have prevented JFK’s assassination. We’re facing a myriad of threats in a resource constrained environment. Our Atlantic Council Counterterrorism Project will help tackle some of the most pressing policy concerns around current and emerging threats, hostages, state sponsorship of terror, the body of law that governs CT, weapons, TTPs, and technology, intelligence, cyber, & women in CT.
