MONEY MAKES THE CHANGE GO ROUND Don’t ask, don’t get. This is the motivating, and educational TEDX message that Kara Logan Berlin shared at Santa Clara University. We were so happy to hear this message because Kara Logan Berlin encouraged us to skip past the ickiness of asking for money and to see it as an opportunity to do more work in an NGO! 1. Reconcile your personal relationship with money and your professional ask for money. There is a distinction between asking for yourself, and asking in pursuit of a bigger purpose.  2. Build Relationships. Do the work and do your homework. Interact with potential donors from their point of interest, what they care about, what they believe in, and also what they are already donating to. Find a midpoint between what you need and what they care for! Where possible, do it in person. 3. Make the ask. When you express your need (concisely). Ask donors “would you consider making xyz donation?” - don’t take the question back. You know your prospect gives to higher education and art museums but you can’t find any evidence of it. How is that possible? When meeting a new prospect, it’s quite exhilarating to find out that they are philanthropic and have given generously to other organizations. Perhaps the prospect will be interested in focusing some of that #philanthropy towards your organization. This is an important ‘tip’ for fundraisers. Remember that you only have a limited bandwidth. ⌛ Make sure you identify wrong fits quickly and allow philanthropists to say ‘no’. 🚀 Achieving a 100% Success Rate in Grant Applications! 🚀 Due to the nature of my role and place of work, I often write funding applications for museum projects, exhibitions and activities - usually applying to small trusts and foundations. Examples of recent funders are The Margaret Williamson Memorial Fund and The Young People's Trust, as well as bigger funders such as The Royal Society who have funded a project called Our Disappearing Nature! Navigating the competitive world of cultural funding can be daunting, but with a focused strategy and understanding of the sector, success is within reach.
