12 January 2025 marked 25 years since the ban on LGBT individuals serving in the navy was lifted on 12 January 2000. This milestone recognises the courage, commitment, and capability of countless individuals who had long been excluded. It was a step toward equality and inclusion, ensuring that those willing to serve could do so authentically. As we reflect on this anniversary, we honour those who paved the way, celebrate the progress made, and acknowledge the commitment towards creating an armed forces environment where everyone is valued and respected. At Modern Military, we know our community is rattled by today's flurry of reporting about a potential impending ban on transgender service. This Military.com com article is just one of many you might have come across: https://lnkd.in/eAh97HZK. We want to reassure everyone that there is not yet any public evidence, policy, or decision from the incoming administration. At this point, this is speculative, and nothing is certain or definitive. That said, we are concerned that another ban remains a possibility, and we deeply understand the fear and uncertainty this incites for so many service members and their loved ones. In the mean time, please read our open letter that covers ways the LGBTQ+ community can prepare in the coming months: https://lnkd.in/e6yb8G3J. We will keep our community updated with any new developments.

Defending Equality and Dignity in the Face of Discrimination As a Marine, a proud transgender woman, and an advocate for both veterans and LGBTQ+ communities, I am deeply concerned about the implications of the recent executive order titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.” This policy not only undermines the rights of transgender and non-binary individuals but also erodes the values of inclusivity, respect, and dignity that define us as a nation. The order’s redefinition of sex erases the identities of countless Americans, invalidating the lives we’ve built and the progress we’ve fought so hard to achieve. It imposes unnecessary and harmful barriers, from denying access to accurate federal documentation to limiting protections in critical federal programs. For those of us who have proudly served this country, it is excruciating to see the very freedoms we defended being denied to so many. This policy is more than just words on paper—it’s a message. It tells transgender and non-binary people that our identities are unwelcome, our existence is inconvenient, and our contributions are less valued. For service members, veterans, and civilians alike, it fuels fear, uncertainty, and stigma, threatening the mental health and well-being of already marginalized communities. To the policymakers and leaders who crafted and support this executive order: LET ME BE VERY CLEAR. We are not a threat to this nation but part of its strength. Transgender and non-binary people are woven into the fabric of America. We are parents, children, siblings, neighbors, service members, veterans, coworkers, friends, leaders, and advocates. Our identities are valid, our existence is not up for debate, and our rights are not negotiable. To the transgender and non-binary community, I want to say this: You are seen, you are valued, and you are loved. Policies like this do not define us, and they will not erase us. We have faced adversity before, and together, we will overcome this challenge as well. This is a time for solidarity and action. Together, we must continue to challenge these injustices through advocacy, education, and legal action. I will dedicate myself to this fight alongside the organizations I serve, and I encourage you to join me in pushing back against this attack on our shared humanity. To our allies, your support has never been more critical. Speak up, stand with us, and help us amplify the voices of those most affected. Together, we can ensure that equality and dignity are more than ideals; they are realities for everyone. If you can donate time or money to the organizations on the frontlines. This is not the end. Our voices, our stories, and our courage will prevail. Growth in the number of women, LGBTQ+ and racial and ethnic minority individuals serving in the military has created an increasingly diverse veteran population. This diversity has created challenges for the Department of Veterans Affairs—specifically, challenges to ensure equity in access to health care, services and benefits for all the veterans it serves. In 2024, DAV will push the VA to do the following: 1. Provide enhanced research and data collection needed for program improvement 2. Ensure diverse representation and culturally sensitive programming 3. Ensure access to quality clinical services wherever care is received 4. Improve environment of care Learn more about DAV’s critical policy goals at http://dav.la/CPG2024.

Did you know? Leonard Matlovich (1943-1988) was a Vietnam War veteran and the first openly gay service member to purposely out himself to the military to challenge their ban on gays. His courage and determination to stand up for equality marked a significant moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights within the military. Matlovich's legacy is a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on advancing civil liberties. When everyone is included, everyone wins. Pride Month, celebrated every June, honours the LGBTQ+ community's vibrant diversity and achievements. It's a time to unite and commemorate progress towards equality and acceptance for all sexual orientations and gender identities. We spotlight pioneers whose courage, achievements and authenticity have profoundly impacted their communities and the world. Additionally, we deeply value our relationships with LGBTQ+ colleagues, clients, customers, partners and suppliers, recognising their essential role in advancing the world of Global Mobility. “As Secretary of Defense, I remain dedicated to making sure that our LGBTQ+ personnel across the Joint Force can continue to serve the country that we all love with dignity and pride — this month and every other one,” wrote Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to commemorate Pride Month in 2023. In 1993, the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was passed, which prohibited the military from asking about one’s sexuality but also prohibited openly gay, lesbian or bisexual persons from serving in the military. Though now seen by many as regressive, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was an improvement on the 1982 policy that explicitly banned gay men and lesbians from serving. In 2011, Congress repealed the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy and allowed gay, lesbian and bisexual men and women to serve openly in the military. In 2021, a policy was passed allowing transgender people to openly serve. The Department of Defense has a rich history of expanding its circle of inclusivity, setting an example for the rest of the nation. The DOD is one of the most diverse organizations in the world and that diversity is one of its greatest strengths, helping it face the complex challenges in the 21st century national security environment. #USArmySignalCorps #Signalcorps #USARMY @US_CYBERCOM @ARCYBER @armyfutures @Signal_School
