Two products from our NCHRP project sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences. The products talk about the harmonization of overweight loads during an emergency. Just as commuters may not realize (or care of) that traffic lights are controlled by different cities/jurisdictions, leading to varying commute delays, trucks carrying critical supplies during emergencies are sometimes unaware of differing regulations across regions/states, especially during emergencies, this guide and products that are developed in response to the challenges faced by supply chains nationwide during COVID-19. They provide solutions to help state permitting agencies, state DOTs, and enforcement teams harmonize and standardize their processes for oversize/overweight loads during emergencies. Postal Regulatory Commission acknowledges the new United States Postal Service Parcel Select rates. While they may not agree with them, they do fall within the current law allowances and it appears that USPS may implement on July 14th, 2024 as planned. From the PRC - "As explained in Section IV.A., supra, the proposed Parcel Select prices are consistent with applicable law, and as a result, the Commission does not have a legally justifiable basis for rejecting the proposed changes." Comments from Package Shippers Association and PostCom put to the PRC that there is reason to review if portions of Parcel Select should be evaluated for a determination of whether it is appropriately classified as Competitive. While they say they cannot address in the docket they are listening........... "However, consistent with prior decisions, the Commission also recognizes that the price increases and service concerns raised by commenters may call into question whether Parcel Select or certain subordinate units are correctly classified as Competitive. Given these questions, it is important for the Commission to fully develop a record of evidence to better understand the nature of this issue. As a result, the Commission intends to establish a new proceeding addressing that issue." #PRC #USPS #ParcelSelect #PSA #PostCom #Packages

PORTS: Norfolk Southern will shutter international intermodal service from South Carolina Ports and Georgia Ports Authority to Chicago, Cincinnati, and Louisville, effective mid-March. While CSX remains an option for importers using Charleston and Savannah to Chicago, Cincinnati, and Louisville, it is a blow to GPA's Mid-America Arc initiative. But the numbers show that the Savannah to Chicago route never really caught on with beneficial cargo owners — it never was able to win share from The Port of Virginia and The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. In this article, Shawn Tureman explains how Norfolk Southern can repurpose the resources to other high-volume lanes, such as Savannah-Charleston to Atlanta or Memphis. He also said that if the port authorities can build density to the Midwest in the future, then NS would re-institute service. https://lnkd.in/e-cTKUz3
