🔥 Wildfire is one risk that, until recently, has flown under the radar of many in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our policy and regulatory environment is struggling to keep up: where and what should we plant; where and how should we build; and, importantly, who should own the risk? Who owns the risk is a question that doesn’t get nearly enough attention. With limited resources and a growing exposure to and severity of hazards, we need to start having some difficult conversations about where our regulations stop and where individual actions begin. We also need to think about whether we use the old blanket approach to natural hazard risk management, or whether we need to become more comfortable with varying degrees of risk exposure and consequence based on community and individual preferences. What do you think? https://lnkd.in/gQAh6Mnk

Struggling to book meetings? Getting ghosted? Want to sell without pushing, convincing, or begging? Read this profile.
Matt and Mandy sell pest control. Matt isn't making many sales. Mandy is making lots of sales. See if you can figure out why. Here’s Matt: “We’re running a promotion on pest control. Are you using a pest control company?” Here’s Mandy: “Not sure about your home, but we’ve seen 7 incidents of rats infesting attics in your neighborhood. They are skilled at using overhanging tree branches to get into your attic. When was the last time you had your attic inspected?” “Hmm, I'm not sure. “If you’d like we can do a free inspection of your attic and identify any potential risks which we’ll document with pictures so you see what’s going on.” “Yes, let’s do that.” Why is Mandy making more sales than Matt?

Fires at the Wildland-Industrial Interface: An Emerging Threat? A relatively new concept is gaining attention: the wildland-industrial interface (WII). While the wildland-urban interface (WUI) has been extensively studied and discussed, the WII remain largely unexplored. However, recent research is beginning to map, define, and analyze these concepts, revealing significant risks. Traditionally, risk analysis has focused on the direct threat to human life, with the WUI at the forefront. But what happens when a wildfire reaches a chemical storage facility? Or when a city’s main industry is compromised by fire? Some might argue that these concerns are exaggerated, but at #Ardentoperations, we work with industries situated within the WII, and we’ve identified numerous critical infrastructures and hazardous storage sites that are extremely vulnerable to wildfires. Although standards and guidelines exist to help industries in the WII protect themselves, awareness of wildfire risks is often lacking among those responsible. So, is this an emerging problem? Absolutely. And it will only worsen if the wildland-industrial interface isn’t properly integrated into industrial risk assessments. #security #wildfire #risk #Firesafetyjournal #wildlandurbaninterface #wui #industries #feudeforet #incendie #ardentoperations

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words, Especially in Pest Management During a recent inspection, I discovered a rodent entry point where rats had chewed through screening to access the attic space. The rub marks along the pipe and inside their self-made access point tell the story of how easily pests can invade a home if vulnerabilities go unnoticed. As pest management professionals, thorough inspections are not just a routine but the foundation of our success. Identifying these subtle signs early on can make all the difference in providing effective solutions and ensuring the long-term satisfaction of our clients.

What could have happened here? When security measures are enough on your farm/plot it is easier to know and avoid such mishaps. Poisonous plants are a cause for concern, jealous neighbors also posioning water reservoirs. Tracking and tracing is caring.

The threat of wildfire is becoming increasingly prevalent and dangerous, posing greater risks to people and property than ever before. Given the challenges to holding large public gatherings in many areas this year, Prep Day 2024 is the ideal time to focus on what you can do to help protect your personal property. Connect with your community in a unified effort to improve wildfire safety where it matters most. By planning risk reduction projects such as creating a 5-foot safety zone around your house, you and your family have the power to make a difference. LEARN MORE AT NFPA.ORG/WILDFIREPREPDAY
