With the support of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, unique backcountry fish and wildlife habitat in the Tongass National Forest of southeast Alaska will once again be conserved under a rule finalized in January of this year by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This decision by the USDA is the latest decision affecting the long-term management of 9.3 million acres of roadless backcountry lands in America’s largest national forest. Originally protected under the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule which was adopted following one of the most extensive public engagement campaigns in the history of federal rulemaking, these protections were rescinded entirely from the Tongass in 2020. BHA has consistently supported the need to sustain the remote habitat, robust fish and wildlife populations and unique hunting and fishing opportunities found within the 9.3 million acres of roadless lands in the Tongass, the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world. The USDA rule restores those long-established protections for these areas, which comprise habitat for sought-after game species, including mountain goats, Sitka black-tailed deer and both brown and black bears, and encompass thousands of miles of salmon-rich waterways, legendary among anglers and fundamental to the state’s commercial salmon industry. BHA has been part of this long-term battle to protect incredible public lands like those in the Tongass and we continue to support durable protections that would guarantee fish and wildlife habitat here remains intact for future generations of hunters and anglers. https://loom.ly/eCLjgOw

A worthwhile article addressing the perennial question of how to, and who should, pay for wildlife conservation. One thing is clear: tourism is not the panacea that its proponents claim. There is no one-fits-all solution. What is required is a blended approach that harnesses tourism, consumptive use, taxes, incentives and philanthropic donations.

$140 Million In Grants From The America The Beautiful Challenge To Restore Lands And Waters   The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation has announced over $140 million in grants to support landscape-scale conservation projects across the United States.   The grants will be used to conserve, restore, and connect wildlife habitats and ecosystems, while also improving community resilience and access to nature. The projects will be implemented by a variety of partners, including tribes, non-profit organizations, and state and local governments.   This funding is part of the America the Beautiful Challenge, a 10-year initiative to conserve 30% of America's lands and waters by 2030. Excellent news for young people between 16 and 24 as Europe’s largest wildlife conservation charity is giving free access to all of its reserves for those in this age group as it aims to better engage young people with nature. The two-year pilot program will be launched in the UK from 6 November, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) said in a document sent out to volunteers. The RSPB has about 200 reserves, putting it amongst the UK’s top landowners. Generally speaking, entrance fees apply for non-members at the 21 most frequently visited sites, which account for about 50% of all reserve visits. Currently, those over 18 are charged an average of about £6, but this fee will be dropped for anyone between 16 and 24 years old. “This is just the first step of our internal ‘youth revolution’ as we begin to transform how the RSPB works with young people,” the document says. +++ This may seem a small step but it is about removing yet another barrier to the land, and to wildlife in the UK, for young people. In the cost-of-living crisis, everyone on low wages or revenues is being hit, and we will see a dramatic reduction in culture and outdoors use amongst the least well-off. Stepping into the breach with this measure is great, and shows the RSPB being militant for wider and fairer access to the land, and to the amazing reserves that it runs throughout the country. Backstory: In the late summer of 2023, 4 scrappy and fiercely determined citizens came together to establish The Tega Cay Wildlife Conservation Society with the mission to give voice to the voiceless in Tega Cay South Carolina. 🦆🌳🐝🌸🦊 Over these last few years, the city made decisions to remove all the coyotes in Tega Cay along side approving large scale clear cutting projects to make room for development. With no predators (except humans) and loss of habitat, our deer numbers have BLOOMED! ⏫While MOST residents enjoy the deer ALL agree that reducing the herd needs to be done to maintain a healthy herd. 🦌🦌🦌Estimates are about 1000 deer on our 3 mile peninsula! Culling-an annual killing program that includes spending nearly $65,000 of taxpayer's funds to bring in an active sharpshooter to remove 80 deer. Despite the fact that we typically see over 200 new fawns in the spring and now have a city torn apart (Spoiler Alert 🚨) the leaders of Tega Cay have chosen to move forward with killing deer in the next few weeks.🩸 Sadly, this waste of time, money, and energy to bring a sharpshooter into residential neighborhoods is the story of too many cities. It is a short-sighted fix to "look like" something is being done to manage the deer ❌ Unsurprisingly, our city is even MORE on fire 🔥 and it is a dark mark that reflects poorly on the respect for life and kindness our community states they value and stand for❌ Bottomline: 📣We can NOT kill our way out of this. There is another option. PZP (also known as ZonaStat-D) is a protein-based dart-delivered birth control that breaks the cycle of reproduction. When very few fawns are born, the herd size stabilizes and attrition reduces the herd naturally. Typically, herd sized experience around 50% less deer in 5 years!!!🎯 Moving Forward: Once the Tega Cay Wildlife Conservation Society learned about the option for a non-lethal, affordable, and sustainable option we have been on a tireless mission to bring the #science of PZP developed by the The Humane Society of the United States to the deer of Tega Cay South Carolina. ✅Our first win was bringing all the passionate leaders to the table to establish our #nonprofitorganization. Starting with Ruthie Smith, Mary Ickert, Stephanie Kessl, Alicia Formato, RVT, and Maureen Norcutt. Knowing sustainable change needs to be backed by smart #policy. We immediately began by building #relationships with each of our city councilmen and SCDNR. We diligently continued to #research our next steps while expanding our #collaborations to include experts in the #wildlife and deer fertility circles. ✅Our next win was facilitated by John Griffin who helped us gain approval for ZonaStat-D in the state of South Carolina! We now have a long-term solution and ability to begin darting deer in Tega Cay! Though there is more work to be done-we are optimistic that in 2024 we will reduce the herd with PZP!
