John F. Kennedy‘s choice of words and phrases on formal and informal occasions reveals so much about his true interests in the individual and collective welfare, freedom, and great future of the U.S., and the world. We can connect these to the sincere expectations of Americans and people around the world to hear President Kennedy would live after they shut him. We can understand why many stood outside Parkland Hospital, many others held the radio close, some peered at the TV, others paced about the newspaper stand, and many prayed, while the few masterminds rejoiced at the success of their plans. The courage that President JFK talked about a lot, pushed Garrison to look into the assassination. Sacrifice a favorite word of JFK moved Ruby, and Ferrie to open up on the conspiracy to murder President Kennedy. Mark and Dorothy exemplified JFK’s belief in the true love of country, and humanity in their tireless pursuit of the truth about President Kennedy’s death. We remember JFK in the 60th year of his cold assassination. While Abraham Lincoln believed slavery was morally wrong, he didn't initially want to free the enslaved people because he thought his constitutional authority as president only allowed him to challenge slavery in the context of war measures. He also worried about the reactions of border states where slavery was still legal, and he didn't want to risk losing their loyalty. Lincoln said, "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it". However, Lincoln's views on slavery evolved. He believed that the founding fathers intended for slavery to end but didn't think they could do so overnight. He also believed that ending slavery, along with adding Black troops to the Union, could hurt the South's economy and war effort. On September 22, 1862, Lincoln issued the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which marked a shift in his position. After the war, he believed that the 13th Amendment was necessary to change the Constitution and abolish slavery.. You can use this website link to see the TV show. Lifting up my relative General John Fulton Reynolds on this Memorial Day (along with the connection between the Civil War and civil rights). A respected senior commander in the Union Army, Reynolds was key in committing the Army to the Battle of Gettysburg (where he unfortunately died). Resistant to the politics of Washington, D.C., Reynolds previously declined President Abraham Lincoln’s request that he command the Army of the Potomac (the penchant to buck bureaucracy remains strong in his family). Today, you can see him standing resolutely in places throughout Pennsylvania (including in front of Philadelphia’s City Hall). Many think that the Civil War was a long ago moment in time - separate and apart from who we are today. Columbia University Professor Barbara Fields corrects this misguided notion: “I think what we need to remember, most of all, is that the Civil War is not over until we, today, have done our part in fighting it, as well as understanding what happened when the Civil War generation fought it. William Faulkner said once that history is not “was,” it’s “is,” and what we need to remember about the Civil War is that the Civil War “is,” in the present, as well as the past. The generation that fought the war, the generation that argued over the definition of the war, the generation that had to pay the price in blood, that had to pay the price in blasted hopes and a lost future also established a standard that will not mean anything until we finish the work. You can say there’s no such thing as slavery anymore, we’re all citizens. But if we’re all citizens, then we have a task to do to make sure that that, too, is not a joke. If some citizens live in houses and others live on the street, the Civil War is still going on. I would LOVE and APPRECIATE your questions and comments on this day. This is not black history, This is American history. We just happened to be black in it. After this day, June 19th, 1865, so much happened. Under the direction of then President Andrew Johnson, nearly all the southern states would enact their own black codes in 1865 and 1866. While the codes granted certain freedoms to African Americans—including the right to buy and own property, marry, make contracts and testify in court (only in cases involving people of their own race)—their primary purpose was to restrict Black peoples’ labor and activity. Black people who broke labor contracts were subject to arrest, beating and forced labor, and apprenticeship laws forced many minors (either orphans or those whose parents were deemed unable to support them by a judge 🤨) into unpaid labor for white planters. Passed by a political system in which Black people effectively had no voice, the black codes were enforced by all-white police and state militia forces—often made up of Confederate veterans of the Civil War—across the South. After passing the Civil Rights Act (over Johnson’s veto), Republicans in Congress effectively took control of Reconstruction. The Reconstruction Act of 1867 required southern states to ratify the 14th Amendment—which granted “equal protection” of the Constitution to former enslaved people—and enact universal male suffrage before they could rejoin the Union. The 15th Amendment, adopted in 1870, guaranteed that a citizen’s right to vote would not be denied “on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” During this period of Radical Reconstruction (1867-1877), Black men won election to southern state governments and even to the U.S. Congress. However, white southerners showed a steadfast commitment to ensuring their supremacy and the survival of plantation agriculture in the postwar years. Support for Reconstruction policies waned after the early 1870s, undermined by the violence of white supremacist organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan. By 1877, Black people had seen little improvement in their economic and social status, and the vigorous efforts of white supremacist forces throughout the region had undone the political gains they had made. We can acknowledge and even celebrate the truth of our history together without dissension. Reality: On this day in 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, approximately 2000 Union troops arrived in Galveston and declared by executive decree that slaves were free. This order freed over 250,000 black people that were still enslaved in Texas. Why was it delayed? The Emancipation Proclamation could not be implemented in areas that were under Confederate control. Why do we acknowledge and celebrate this day? We acknowledge it because it happened. We celebrate it because the freedom of any person or people who was once unfairly held in bondage, abused and mistreated, should be celebrated. Though there was and still is in some places an uphill battle, freed slaves who survived faced many hardships and heartaches. Many searched for family members that they had been separated from hence the importance of reunions. They had to figure out the safe places where they could gain employment and settle. They were resilient during times when many would have given up and their resilience led to the progression of a people and progression a country. A call to action: No matter your race or ethnicity, don’t be afraid to acknowledge the hard truths of our past as well as the good. The important part is to work in unity today and not allow for the mistreatment and abuse of others to happen again.
