"We hope to be able to enter our animals into the system in the future." Kimara Goethals has been working at the Agriculture and Horticulture School in Oedelem for 10 years, first as a science teacher and now as the director for the past three years. Kimara aims to map all the trees, plants, and flowers in the school garden more clearly via Plantsoon. They plan to open the garden to parents and the wider public. The Agriculture and Horticulture School aims to map all the trees, plants, and flowers in the school garden more clearly via Plantsoon. They plan to open the garden to parents and the wider public. "Currently we only have plastic cards with names, but there's no systematic approach. Students cannot easily access additional information. I dream of a system where students can use QR codes to access detailed information about each plant or tree, instantly learning about its location preferences, such as sun or shade, soil choice, and grouping with other species. Visitors to our flower picking garden can also check which flowers are ready to pick via the webshop"; principal Kimara envisions. Cultivating Knowledge: The Greenhouse Revolution in Moscow Schools In the heart of Moscow, School No. 1354 “Vector” has become more than just a place of learning—it’s a thriving urban oasis under the guidance of biology teacher Ivan Parfeny. For several years now, students from grades 5 to 7 have been nurturing tomato and cucumber seedlings in hydroponic systems, later transplanting them into real greenhouses on the school grounds, eagerly monitoring the fruits of their labor. Breaking Stereotypes Urban children often have limited exposure to agriculture, viewing gardening as a relic of the past. Ivan Parfeny challenged this notion within the walls of School No. 1354 by introducing practical botany lessons in a greenhouse environment. This initiative not only engaged students in hands-on learning about photosynthesis and plant structure but also instilled a deep appreciation for cultivation. Hydroponics: Growing Minds and Greens To extend learning beyond traditional growing seasons, hydroponic systems were introduced within the school. Here, students cultivate microgreens and seedlings in nutrient-rich solutions before transferring them to soil. Empowered to choose their crops, initially drawn to exotic varieties like avocado, they soon opt for faster-growing options lik...

🌱 Addressing the Needs of Young Professionals in Horticulture 🌿 In a recent HortWeek poll, it's disheartening to see that 63% of respondents believe that young professionals in horticulture are not receiving adequate support from their employers. While 25% do feel the industry is doing enough, it's clear that there's room for improvement. Suggestions range from pushing for a more structured training program and support for attendance at industry events like YPHA, HTA National Plant Show and Glee Birmingham Show. One respondent highlighted the importance of recognizing the value of attending these events, both for the knowledge sharing and contacts, emphasizing the positive impact on business success. However, a significant challenge raised is the lack of awareness among employers about such opportunities. As one employer noted, "If employees don't ask, how can we support them?" It's crucial to bridge this information gap and find effective channels to communicate upcoming events and initiatives beneficial for young professionals in horticulture. Other suggestions from respondents include: 📚 More fact-finding visits and networking opportunities. 🌱 Better training, reflective pay, and support for entry-level horticulturists. 🌍 Government support to cover costs of nurturing young talent. How can we as a industry better support the next generation of talent? A question that will be the cornerstone of addressing the skills shortage from a retention point of view. Full article:
