"I am Preservation" with Joana Miranda As we celebrate our 50th anniversary we are highlighting a video series called "I am Preservation" to exhibit the widespread love of landmarks throughout the City. Please join in the celebration and send us your video. We will post clips throughout the rest of the year on our many social media platforms. TIPS for making your own "I am Preservation" video. Say your name, and if you like, the neighborhood that you live in. Briefly comment on what you love about New York City landmarks or a specific historic building, place, or structure. And, finish by saying “I am Preservation!” Film in landscape mode (hold smartphone horizontally) If you can’t film yourself, maybe have a friend film you in front of a landmark or your favorite historic building or structure. Be aware of your surroundings (street-level noise, etc.) Check your lighting. If possible, you don’t want to be in an area that is too dark or too bright. Set up your shot (minimize things that might be distracting on screen) We are looking for short clips. Thirty seconds at maximum. Make eye contact, don’t forget to smile. Speak up and enunciate your words. We want viewers to hear you. Send your finished video clips to photos@nylandmarks.org Have fun! #iampreservation #nylandmarks #nylandmarksconservancy

When a picture has a story or a broader context behind it, it is perceived differently. For instance, it's a photo of just a tree, or is it? This beautifully old oak tree grew in the majestic park of Pavlovsk, in the southern part of Saint-Petersburg. And, likely, the majority of people who were in this volume of space and time more than a couple of times will remember this exact tree if asked. This tree is long gone. It was cut down by the park-keeping service in later years due to reasons obvious from the photograph. Not only does Pavlovsky Park have its own extensive story and is deliberately made to look like a fantasy forest, but there's also a personal story of the day I took this photo. By pure coincidence, there's a couple in the background. We also walked as a couple being on a date with my wife that day. We had a walk at this beautiful park, and I took a photo of this tree on my Cannon 5D classic, which was the right tool to capture the lighting and the vibe of that day. This photo has the most relevance to us with my wife and also makes a somewhat relevant story for those who have seen this tree with their own eyes and remembered it, while it's just a photo of a random tree for everybody else. From an information-theoretic perspective, it is good when part of a story is already shared among the audience and your work ignites the imagination by invoking and enriching some shared knowledge.

BODIES OF WATER May 2024 Issue Trailer Over 50 works from the Science New Wave. https://lnkd.in/epQMwUS9 Bodies of Water take on many identities. A well, a pond, a river, a stream, a sea, a fountain, a bay, a lake, an ocean. Each of these holds an innate right to exist and merit safeguarding, being universal and vital sources of our water supply. And yet, these bodies also refer to the very life within the blue depths pulsating away. Through the immersed lens of a camera eye, we bear witness to the haunting beauty of life forms both real and imagined, their forms twisting and undulating in the gentle embrace of the currents. Yet, amid the beauty and wonder of these submerged worlds, there lurks a pressing question: are these embodiments merely specters of the imagination, or do they serve as silent cries for help from a realm beyond our understanding? As we gaze upon their shimmering forms, we are left to ponder the nature of our own existence and the interconnectedness of all life beneath the waves.
