Legacy media has often struggled to translate its...thing...to digital platforms, and the static front cover is notable among those challenges. But this video by Entertainment Weekly answers the question, "what can I do on this platform that I can't possibly do in print?" There's a lot that I love about EW's TikTok cover. The concept could ostensibly work in both a static and dynamic treatment, so from a production standpoint, you can have a realistic budget. The chess theme applies to House of the Dragon literally, which I like because the internet doesn't do subtlety very well. Which brings me to Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke being central to this concept. By using these two actors on their digital cover, EW is winking at the very audience that made the "negroni sbagliato with prosecco in it" meme explode in 2022, which, in turn, boosted interest in the show as well as its actors. The cover doesn't just work as a digital concept, it also shows a real understanding of who EW's audience is on a specific non-legacy platform, and what that audience responds to. And it's a worthwhile investment because TikTok in particular is a place that fosters pop culture discourse and fanhood to a superlative degree. That Gen Z flocks to it is an opportunity for legacy media to replenish its aging audience, which is a concern that all cultural institutions - artistic, media, etc. - share.

The economy of attention - human attention is a rare commodity. $700B a year in digital advertising across a trillion minutes of content consumed. There is a more efficient future for an economy of this size and Rug Radio is here to do it.

More creators need to lean into their unfair advantage! Creators have earned direct and genuine connections with their fans that would make most larger media and entertainment brands drool.  The intersection of authenticity and fan engagement is rarer than most would think in media and entertainment.  I have been surprised at how reluctant many creators are to lean into the relationship they’ve earned with their fans. If you haven’t yet picked up Taylor Lorenz’s recent book Extremely Online, it’s well worth the read.  Taylor Lorenz writes to conclude the book, “[w]hen one thinks of ‘the media,’ they often think of broadcast news and newspapers; in reality, creators are ‘the media’ of today.  The media landscape that they dominated is only becoming more digital and more distributed.  Cycles of virality are accelerating …. Legacy institutions that refuse to adapt will continue to fade into oblivion.” The creators who most successfully bridge the gap between “legacy institutions” and the rising Creator Economy will be those who most successfully press their unfair advantage.  Lean into your relationships with your fans.
