The Nurse Practitioner Journal’s Post

The soaring prevalence of depression and anxiety in children, teenagers, and young adults is now a public health epidemic, yet access to timely evidence-based mental health treatment is often lacking due to a severe shortage of mental health providers. This article provides an overview of the current state of depression and anxiety in youth as well as first-line treatment. The Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment (COPE) program, a cognitive-behavioral skills-building intervention, is an evidence-based intervention for timely treatment that can be delivered by NPs, physicians, physician associates/assistants, teachers, parents, and social workers in various settings as a mental health intervention.
