The plastic menace is a by-product of the Petrol Chemical Industry. WE, people of the World, need to urgently relook our Consumer patterns and demands and move away from petrol chemical products. Corporations need to relook their supply chains and pivot towards environmentally friendly technologies and products. Governments need to relook their laws and taxes and ensure that the industries are better regulated and enforced on the Environmental checks. IF we can start today, we may yet be able to stem the negative impacts on Environment, on the flora and fauna and ultimately on our health. What do you think? Planet, PEople over profit

Even a stay at home parent can take a stand against plastic pollution by simply refusing to bring home any single use plastics. The journey of plastic and polythene waste once it leaves the home as “waste” is incredibly slow and often unsupervised. Therefore, plastic does not reach its intended destination - a recycle station. Often plastic waste leaves homes to end up at a dump site, even when disposed of as “plastic waste” instead of disposing all types of waste in a jumble. In Sri Lanka for example, the waste collection process often fails to meet its required target due to the lack of literacy in sustainability within the waste management community itself. Sustainability education should be provided not just to the heads of the waste management chain, but to the waste collectors too. They must be empowered in their job to serve the community by disposing waste according to its type. It’s the parents’ duty, to educate their children on the importance of waste management and correct disposal of waste. Children as young as preschoolers, should be guided to throw away their trash into the appropriate trash can, to use 10R practices around the house, refuse to use plastics when alternatives are available, support sustainable markets and live a lifestyle of conscious consumerism. 🙌🏽 Together we can #beatplasticpollution 🩵

Now more than ever, we must unite to tackle plastic pollution at its source, rethinking production, consumption, and waste. The issue of plastic pollution aligns with UN SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Universities and industries can collaborate through sustainable material research, circular economy practices, educational initiatives, and innovations in waste management. These efforts also support SDG 14: Life Below Water and SDG 15: Life on Land by protecting ecosystems impacted by plastic pollution.

Governments are hopelessly slow, regulation takes too long and ,especially in the US, government is in the pockets of the corporate lobbying groups. The key to this change is collective public action, consumer activism, attacking the corporate plastic polluters,who are well known and well documented, hitting them with boycotts, refusing to buy their brands and damaging their revenues. Then, and only then, will they change. This kind of action has been proven time and again to work better, quicker and faster than waiting for regulation - eg. Nike and their sweat shop labor practices back in the day.
