What do you gain by being bold in the engineering world? Does it payoff to communicate boldly... especially when dealing with project that are late, scheduling or budget issues, or technical challenges that seem insurmountable? In a word - absolutely! If a project is at risk of failure, is it better to hide it and posture, pretend everything is ok to the customer, and make false promises, or better to be open and transparent, and give an honest update and collaborate with the owner to find the best solutions? I know my preference! By communicating boldly (and being respectful while you're at it), you build trust with those you work with, and provide real value to others. The engineer who keeps problems or solutions to themselves isn't doing the world (or their customers) a favor... but by communicating it you open the door to better collaboration between all stakeholders, and bringing real value to everyone involved. This has been the essence of what I've been personally teaching our team at Delta Wye Engineering. I do this first by having it ingrained into our values, second by personally role modeling it in business and in my personal life, and third by demanding it of every one of my team members! As an electrical engineer with ten years of experience, I've noticed that some engineers tend to get bored with their work, especially when dealing with similar systems. This can lead to a false sense of pride and resistance to taking on new challenges. Unfortunately, this can sometimes result in accidents, even when dealing with low voltages. I have seen this happen firsthand, and it can be detrimental to an engineer's capabilities. It's important for employers to carefully assess an individual's capabilities during the hiring process. It's also important to recognize that forgetting the name of a protocol doesn't necessarily mean that someone is unfamiliar with it. Experience is crucial in the electrical engineering field, and mistakes and accidents can help solidify theoretical knowledge and skills. All levels of experience should be respected and valued in the industry.

If you are curious about these roles, then I highly suggest to read Alex Ewerlöf’s blog post. And yes, I have seen the great stuff good staff engineers can do, it is a role many ERP implementations and transformations need. I consider it some sort of mix between Engineer, Architect. and Project Manager with focus on Dev, Ops, and whatever Xyz you might add to that. The primary role of a systems engineer is to de-risk the answers to 'Are we building the right thing?' and 'Are we building the thing right?'. These questions should be addressed intelligently using a risk-based approach. Too many SE's I've encountered get too excited by MBSE (Lets have a modelling team!), using their tools (SysML!) or focus on things that fundamentally do not help the project. An SE works with the other functions (engineering, financial, project etc) to improve the chance of a successful project outcome. It can be a bloody thankless task as we work cross the development stovepipes so are often the ones to find issues with the solutions (which are cheaper fixed when earlier found) and get the blame for finding them!
